Multi-zone climate control

To improve comfort, car manufacturers often install multi-zone climate control. This word implies that the interior of the car will be divided into conditional zones, in each of which a certain temperature will be maintained.

The following options exist:

  • 2-zone, the most common, however, the least effective option. In this case, two separate zones are at the front of the car (driver and passenger);
  • 3-zone, with this option the temperature is set not only for the two front passengers, but also for a separate area of ​​the rear seat;
  • 4-zone, in in this case The temperature is set for each passenger in the hotel, both in the front and rear seats.

Multi-zone climate control is implemented using a controlled system of dampers and air ducts for each part of the car. They contain sensors that take readings and transmit them to the control unit, which, by adjusting the opening angles of the dampers, achieves the required temperature values ​​for each zone.

Climate control

Climate control is controlled on the corresponding panel. Required values are set using regulators. They are transmitted to the control unit, which sets optimal values damper opening angles and efficient air flow.

The damper regulates the temperature as a whole (by mixing cold and hot air), so in multi-zone climate control it is impossible to set very different values temperature indicators. Periodically, the control unit polls the sensors and slightly adjusts the operation of the actuators.

Operation of the climate control is quite simple. It is not recommended to use it without a properly functioning cooling system, since there is always moisture in the air, and without drying the air it will be deposited on the evaporator, which will lead to the so-called “swampy” smell in the car interior.

In addition, moisture is a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and microbes, which can greatly affect the health of passengers and the driver himself. It is recommended to periodically allow only the air conditioner to operate (even in winter period), in order to remove moisture from the evaporator.

You should also not open the windows or sunroof when driving with climate control. In this case, the sensor readings will be confused and the system will not be able to function normally.

To summarize, we can say that climate control is fully responsible for the microclimate inside the car and takes care of the health of the driver and his passengers. Automatic adjustment to maintain comfortable temperature conditions inside the car allows the driver not to be distracted from the road and allows the driver to fully concentrate on the driving process. All this makes driving a car safe and comfortable.

What is climate control? Climate control - a technologically advanced heating/ventilation system for the interior. The air conditioner is used as the basis for creating the “climate”. Installation usually has two modes:

  • auto. When the climate control unit independently selects the optimal temperature/direction of air masses, focusing on the readings of the corresponding sensors;
  • manual. The air temperature is set independently using controls (fan speed, air direction, “recirculation” mode).

Principle of operation

Climate control in a car operates through an air conditioner/heater radiator combination. With the help of the interaction of these nodes, it is possible to maintain a given air temperature and deliver it to the cabin.

Ventilation/heating systems, as well as an air conditioning system, are involved in the “climate” process. All three components are combined into a single control unit.

Moreover, each system consists of several nodes. The same air conditioner includes a compressor, evaporator, receiver, and condenser.

The heater radiator and the supply air fan form the backbone of the heating and ventilation system.

Climate control in a car can be:

  • single zone (standard);
  • dual-zone (for driver/front passenger);
  • three-zone (optional: for the rear row of seats);
  • four-zone (optional: dividing the rear row climate system into two zones);

Multi-zone climate control systems allow you to change the temperature/direction of air flow for each person sitting in the cabin individually. In addition, the “climate” can be intelligent: independently change the air temperature and fan rotation speed. Climate control in a luxury car also allows you to change the degree of illumination of the interior by means of sun blinds.

Control

Maintaining the required interior microclimate is possible using the following components:

Sensors

  1. Photodiode. Detects the ambient light level.
  2. Entrance sensor (external). Determines the outside air temperature and compares it with the cabin temperature. Located on the front of the car, behind the bumper.
  3. Exit sensors. The cabin air temperature is identified.
  4. Evaporator temperature sensors.
  5. Sensor that detects pressure (air conditioning).
  6. Drive device sensors.
  7. Sun sensor. Mounted on the windshield, based on influence determination sun rays raises/lowers the temperature in the cabin.
  8. Sensor for determining the position of the sun relative to the car. You can find this function in a premium car. Comes complete with multi-zone installations. The essence of the device is to determine the temperature difference in the cabin and restore its balance.

Each sensor works as follows: analog signals are converted to digital and sent to the climate control unit.

Driver (actuator) elements of the air conditioning system:

  • mechanical/electric drives;
  • fan motor.

The elements are activated through a single control unit, which supplies the corresponding signals.

Which is preferable?

Air conditioning or climate control – which is better? In essence, “climate” is an air conditioner, only more functional. The answer to the question suggests itself, but not everything is so simple.

Advantages of "climate":

  • possibility of setting a fixed air temperature. The air conditioner can only reduce/increase the fan speed, in other words, simply freeze. While his opponent allows both cooling the flow of air masses and heating;
  • presence of automatic mode. The air conditioner is deprived of this function, which is why you have to constantly be distracted by adjusting it;
  • the ability to save fuel consumption by turning off equipment when it reaches desired temperature. The air conditioner works until you turn it off manually;
  • “climate” is better tolerated human body due to a softer temperature transition. This is possible thanks to sensors in the cabin that send impulses to the control unit, which, in turn, sets a gentle temperature regime. Therefore, there is less risk of catching a cold. The air conditioner issues cold air sharply, creating a resonance between the outside temperature and the cabin temperature - which is fraught.

The common disadvantage of both systems is a reduction in engine power (about seven horses), which affects the dynamic qualities of the car.
