A story about Yota devices cannot be complete without mentioning a powerful stationary solution. Yota Internet Center lives up to its name to the fullest: it is a router that is capable of servicing absolutely all computers and gadgets in the house - and at the same time. Obviously, we have an option for home use, as well as for a small office, where “connecting” the Internet in other ways will be problematic. Often companies are forced to use the Internet connection provided by the landlord of their office - for example, in business centers. Using this modem, you can regain control of the Internet and stop sponsoring local “monopolistic” providers. And the cost of maximum access speed - only 2,700 rubles per month - allows you to use one Internet center without noticeable restrictions by all employees at once.

There really isn't much to unpack there. The wide rectangular box contains short instructions, a miniature power cable and one Ethernet cord - and not a “thick” one, as in most standard configurations, but a flat one. The actual speed depends only on the strength of the received signal at a particular point, and the maximum value is determined by your tariff plan.

I won’t reveal a big secret if I say that with the advent of fourth-generation networks, the mobile Internet made a big leap, even catching up to some extent with the home Internet. Personally, I noticed that I no longer try to reach public Wi-Fi when I have a 4G icon on my phone. LTE makes it possible to watch multimedia content in maximum quality and communicate with friends and relatives through video calls without pixelating the image. Of course, this type of connection is not yet on such a large scale, but at least it is coming to large cities quite actively. In Moscow, this service is provided by four providers, and we decided to conduct a small test, collecting a bit of statistics.

For testing, we needed four identical smartphones with LTE support. And since Huawei is one of the locomotives of LTE development, the choice fell on the Huawei Ascend G6 model (review). This device is perfect for the role of an average solution with LTE support and good operating speed. Personally, I really liked the device as an inexpensive and high-quality solution. The latest firmware was installed on all devices.

The testing involved SIM cards from mobile operators MegaFon, MTS, Beeline and Yota. The last participant is a newcomer to the cellular services market, but it was one of the first to develop a 4G network. Yes, it is more of a virtual provider owned by MegaFon, but it had its own LTE towers. It was the appearance of this guest that became the pretext for conducting a test, the main point of which is whether 4G from MegaFon and Yota are now different things, or whether the merger has already occurred globally. This material cannot be called a full-fledged test of mobile operators. There are several reasons for this:

1) The test was carried out only on data transfer speed, that is, the quality of calls is not taken into account. 3G performance indicators are also not taken into account.

2) All measurements were taken at different times and days, which will be indicated in the course of all the characteristics.

3) On the ground, one point was used, and the distribution of networks is a very complex nature. So, turning a corner, you can get completely different results. Testing was carried out in fact “here and now”.

4) At the last stage of testing, unfortunately, one of the testing resources fell off, so the data on it is not entirely complete.

However, despite all these “buts,” the experiment we conducted provided useful information on the issues of synthetic tests and the behavior of networks under various conditions.

So this is how we tested. The cycle is quite simple. The sequence of actions will help if you yourself want to check the screenshots that we posted separately. To begin with, we, of course, determine the position on the map using Google Maps. With this test we check the number of lost packets, which indicates instability of data transmission. To test the outgoing speed, we used the Iperf client, selecting an open server and specifying the following command “-c iperf.eltel.net -P 10 -w 100k”. This command performs 10 file transfers, giving overall statistics and speed. To analyze the incoming speed, we decided to simply use the Mail.ru Cloud. Of course, we carried out measurements of downloading files from fast servers a couple of times, but in general the main task is to find out a really working option. You can’t do without a SpeedTest measurement; it will act as an indicator indicating the state of the network.

After multiple passes, we found that SpeedTest is indeed quite suitable as the main determinant of network transmission quality. Of course, you shouldn’t believe in numbers higher than 60 Mbit/s per input, but in general, if SpeedTest writes about 30 Mbit/s, then it is so. The situation with outgoing traffic is somewhat different. In this case, everything depends on the provider, and Yota stood out because its indicators in SpeedTest and Iperf were very different, indicating that in reality the provider cuts Upload, while the synthetic test shows high numbers. But other providers, with large “virtual” numbers, showed similar results in the combat mission. Returning to the issue of downloading, in a couple of cases we encountered a situation where LTE speeds were very low; in a couple of places, for the sake of experiment, a comparison was made with 3G. As a result, it turned out that even with a low fourth-generation network level, it was still ahead of HSDPA in downloading large files. The comparison between Yota and MegaFon was also interesting. In general, the networks’ indicators were very close to each other, but sometimes severe discrepancies still do not allow us to say that the same base stations (BS) are used.

Below I will describe each of the 22 points with small comments. The main indicators will be screenshots from SpeedTest. To summarize, I will introduce a 3-point rating, where a point will be deducted if the speed value in SpeedTest is less than 10 Mbit/s, or if packet loss is more than 5%. 1. The start began from Rechnoy Vokzal metro station on a day off in the evening. At this point, Yota and MegaFon performed very poorly. Both providers not only had problems with speed, but also with a small packet loss of 1-2%.

2. M. Dynamo, Mail.ru tower. Beeline has relatively low performance, but even with them there were no problems with uploading HD content to YouTube.

3. M. Sports. Beeline, despite its leadership in SpeedTest, showed a large packet loss of 6%. This and some of the subsequent tests were carried out in traffic on the Third Transport Ring (third transport ring), so the networks are heavily congested.

4. M. Dubrovka. Yota had a low level, while the rest showed good results.

5. M. Krasnoselskaya. All subjects showed excellent results.

6. Having made a big detour to change the iron horse, we ended up in the city of Khimki on the street. Nakhimov. In this place, Yota and MTS performed very poorly, while in the courtyards it was generally possible to catch an empty zone. However, Beeline again showed a packet loss of 6%.

7. MKAD, 80 km. Only Beeline turned out to be an outsider with low speed, but without packet loss.

8. Dmitrovskoe highway, no. 89. Stop for a snack. All participants delivered above 20 Mbit/s, and Beeline had a packet loss of 3%.

9. M. Vladikino. In this region, all providers showed low packet loss. However, MegaFon and Yota performed worst of all, showing not only poor speed, but also losses of more than 5%. It is quite possible that there is a general BS going on here.

10. M. VDNH. Yota is experiencing a loss of speed in this area compared to other operators.

11. M. Elektrozavodskaya. All demonstrated high-quality data transfer. In SpeedTest, MTS showed a high response value, but these figures were not confirmed in the terminal.

12. New day, again a day off, again evening. MegaFon and Yota pleased us with the connection speed, but Beeline performed very poorly, but it’s not as bad as MTS, where we didn’t see an LTE connection at all.

13. M. Molodezhnaya. MTS showed the least in the test, but it is still above 10 Mbit/s (the maximum declared 3G speed according to the specifications).

14. M. University. In this area, MegaFon and Yota noticed minor packet losses of less than 5% and low download speeds. But the upload speed, on the contrary, turned out to be high, and here, as before, it is clear that Yota intends to cut uploads to 1 Mbit/s.

15. M. Varshavskaya. MTS runs on the edge of 10 Mbit/s. So, as a preventive measure, 1 point is deducted.

16. M. Cherkizovskaya. Another black hole. This time for both MTS and Beeline. However, MegaFon also loses a point for low speed.

17. New day. This time it’s a weekday, and here we’ll test the strength of the center of Moscow. M. Teatralnaya, the test was carried out after the presentation of Huawei Honor 6 (video) (what a coincidence). This time Yota showed a decrease in speed compared to opponents. MTS showed a packet loss of 3%.

18. M. Tverskaya. Lots of Internet users and corporations sitting nearby. Everyone ended up either below or on the border. MTS and MegaFon were distinguished by the loss of packages at the level of 5%.

19. M. Kitay-Gorod. MegaFon was on the border, Yota was also close, but 11.5 Mbit/s is still not 3G. MTS and Beeline performed excellently.

20. M. Tretyakovskaya. In this section, Beeline performed the worst, with weak numbers in SpeedTest and packet loss of as much as 27%. MTS also receives a minus point for being in a borderline state.

21. It's hot. M. Kyiv, Kyiv station, almost rush hour. Beeline and MTS coped without problems, but Yota and MegaFon gave up slightly.

22. End point. Belorussky railway station. 18.00, rush hour. Only MTS performed poorly, showing low speed and 14% packet loss. The rest did a great job.

As you can see, in most places the operators show good results. The average speed in Moscow is around 20 Mbit/s. Of course, due to the heavy load in the metropolis, it is difficult for 4G networks to show all their capabilities. But for the end user, the maximum speed is not so important, and the current indicators are quite enough for comfortable work.

As already mentioned, it was the emergence of Yota as a mobile operator that forced this test to be carried out. Many people are interested in the declared unlimited Internet from this operator. But, alas, it has limitations. Firstly, the already mentioned reduction in upload speed, which for many negates the advantages of LTE in the form of fast file downloading. Secondly, when distributing the Internet via Wi-Fi, the speed is reduced to 1 Mbit/s (that is, you cannot use a Yota SIM card to conveniently access the Internet from other devices). The cost of unlimited traffic is 300 rubles, but you cannot buy it separately without a package of minutes, and now the cost increases to a minimum of 440 rubles per month. The disadvantage is that there is a separate tariff for tablets (iPads and devices that are not capable of making calls and have a large diagonal will be considered tablets).

At MegaFon, we signed up for the “Internet S” tariff, costing 350 rubles, which includes 3 GB of traffic - this amount will be affordable for the average user.

At the time of testing, the Beeline tariff line did not have a Highway tariff, which gives the same 3 GB of traffic for the same 350 rubles, but at the moment until January the provider has a “the faster, the free” service, which is not takes into account 4G traffic. It would be nice if they extended this promotion on a permanent basis, competing with Yota. We used the “All for 900” package, the cost of which is 30 rubles per day (5 GB of traffic, a package of calls and SMS are provided).

MTS has two options for providing the Internet: purchasing packages and the BIT service. In our case, the BIT would be inconvenient due to the limitation of high-speed daytime traffic. The cost of a standard 3 GB package is the standard 350 rubles. The relatively unlimited “SuperBIT” costs the same, but it has a large number of restrictions. In fact, it will be of interest to those who are not entirely sure of the traffic they consume, giving them the opportunity not to spend more.

The choice of a mobile operator must be approached individually. You need to weigh not only the tariff options and the quality of the services provided, but also your personal experience of working with operators, as well as the experience of your friends. One way or another, having examined the operation of 4G in Moscow, we can say that the operators have done a good job providing users with affordable and fast mobile Internet. It’s difficult to identify just one leader; everyone did the same, plus or minus. However, qualitative growth is still required, especially in the context of the increasing availability of LTE smartphones. Yota speed tests in 3G and 4G networks are carried out by many subscribers, uploading data to the Internet. Analysis of their tests shows that maximum reception speed varies from 20 to 35 Mbit/s. Even if we take into account the fact that this is 10 times less than the maximum theoretical speed, the same 35 Mbit is simply an excellent result for wireless networks.

Concerning upload speed, it varies from 5 to 15 Mbit/s. The speeds indicated above are enough for any need, even for watching online videos in HD quality. 3G networks can also operate at such speeds, but practice shows that there we will see a maximum of 5-6 Mbit/sec. As for Yota, it gives more decent results, although not everywhere. Let's see how we can speed test the Iota and get our own test results.

To conduct a Yota speed test, we need to get a Yota modem (or router). Yota works specifically for this purpose on the network Free test drive program. As part of this program, subscribers are provided with any modems and routers for speed testing. To receive the equipment, you must pay the full cost to the cashier. After this, we will be given three days (not counting the day of sale) of free unlimited Internet Yota. Having connected and configured the equipment, we can begin testing Yota speed - access speed is regulated through the Yota Personal Account.   • Distance from the nearest base station;
  • Base station load;
  • Features of radio wave propagation at a specific reception point.

If a large number of subscribers live in the area of ​​the base station, and they all decide to go online, then the access speed will be low. And at night, when most people are sleeping, the speed will be high. Also, the speed varies slightly depending on the region. For example, in MSK (in Moscow), where there are more subscribers, the workload is higher than in Krasnodar, which will affect the access speed.

There are already a lot of publications on the Internet about the new LTE router Yota Quanta 1QDLZZZ0ST2, which replaced Egg and Many after the migration of the capital’s Yota from the WiMAX standard to the more progressive and fast LTE. A lot of reviews of complaints and criticism are written about the fact that Quanta does not charge during operation, that it only lasts 4 hours on battery power, instead of the 7-8 that Yota Many functioned. There are many places where Speedtest indicators are given that fluctuate over a wide range. I’ll say right away that I haven’t tested the router yet, I just can’t get through to the Yota call center and find out when and how a replacement can be made. But there is something to be said within the framework of a general understanding of the operation of routers, and I have tested a lot of them, and they are systematically studied in the editorial office. In the forums that I happened to read, there is a lot of misunderstanding of the basic principles.

Regarding speed. The maximum speed in the Yota LTE network is now limited by an ideological threshold of 20 megabits - subscribers who are willing to pay 1,400 rubles per month will hit this ceiling. In reviews, speed is often measured using Speedtest. This benchmark in megabits measures the data transfer speed between the client device from which the measurement is taken and the affiliated server. It also measures the speed of requests (ping) to the server, which allows you to assess whether a particular type of Internet is suitable for playing games and using certain services. For measurement, the “closest” server is selected from a large number scattered around the world in order to test the maximum possible “data transmission channel width”. If you choose some distant server for testing, it may turn out that the speed of working with it is much lower than with other servers and the result has no practical value.

And yet, we can safely say that the Speedtest numbers should be used carefully - they are “indicative”. Sometimes you even get the feeling that the benchmark is skewed towards the higher side. The speed of data pumping “to their server” may not reflect the speed of downloading data from the Internet, or the speed of uploading from the user’s computer. A more reliable test, in my eyes, is to download a torrent from a source with a large number of seeds. The upload speed of a torrent can also be an indicator, but here a lot depends on the number of peers, so it is more practical to upload several files to different hosting sites with measurement using something like a DUmeter.

You need to understand that the speed of surfing the Internet depends not only on the channel of the provider and router, but also on the server from which you receive or send data. If you have 100 megabits to your provider, this does not mean that you will receive data from YouTube at that speed. Something in the gap between the server and you can also slow down the channel. And you can get data from busy servers, even on a wide channel, a teaspoon per hour.

Let's return to Quanta. I couldn’t find it either in the instructions or on the Yota website what Wi-Fi standard does this router support?. Even the WEB interface does not indicate what it can do. After intensive googling, I discovered that Yota Quanta, like Egg and Many, supports a maximum of Wi-Fi 802.11g, and Quanta is also compatible with 802.11b. Both this standard and the other operate at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. Let me remind you that for 802.11b the maximum connection speed (not data transfer!!!) is 11 megabits per second, and for 802.11g it is already 54 megabits per second. After publishing this post in the comments, the user shlygin indicated that his MacBook Pro detects a connection with Yota Quanta as 802.11n , in his case the connection speed was 73 megabits. Therefore, the information on the Internet is incorrect, the Quanta router supports at least b/g/n in the 2.4 GHz band. Since I didn’t notice a choice in the 5 GHz menu, we will consider the router to be single-band. This changes the situation somewhat, so after clarifying the information, the post was updated and the conclusions were adjusted.

About megabits and megabytes: a megabit is usually denoted as Mb or Mb, we at THG prefer to indicate it as Mbit to avoid confusion among readers. Megabytes, by analogy, are written as MB, MB or MB.

In the first version of this post, I pointed out that if the Yota Quanta LTE router only supports 802.11g, with its maximum connection speed of 54 Mbit, then Wi-Fi could be the bottleneck when connecting to the network. However, according to updated data, the LTE router supports an 802.11n connection, and this changes my rating for the better.

Among inexpensive home routers in 2012, the much faster 802.11n is already becoming the standard, providing connection speeds of 150 or 300 Mbps, and in some places up to 450 (N900 routers, such as the Netgear WNDR4500, when connected to some Wi-Fi adapters, plus these are MacBooks). Of course, we can say that in practice, in a network where the speed is limited to 20 megabits, no 150 or 300 megabits are needed. In addition, 802.11g is a much more widespread standard; many more affordable devices support it. But (!) there is also such a thing - actual data transfer speed between the router and the device, especially when connected to the router simultaneously with multiple devices. And don't forget about data transfer between devices, connected by routers into one local network. This may not be particularly important for some, but I would be much more happy if we could exchange data on a wireless LAN more quickly, because I use a mobile router not only for the Internet, but also for a photo studio with a camera, for transferring data from the camera to computer.

About the actual speed: the point is simply that on routers that support connection speed 54 Mbps, no one has ever seen the actual data transfer between a PC and a router, equal to the same fifty-four megabits, just as no one has ever seen, from an external hard drive equipped with a USB 2.0 interface, data transfer at all 480 megabits per second, being the peak of USB 2.0. Roughly speaking, if the speedometer in your car is marked up to 300 kilometers per hour, it is not at all a fact that you will be able to accelerate to them.

Likewise, most modern 802.11n routers, which have a magic figure of 150 and 300 Mbits per second, in practice show that data between the router and the computer is transferred at a speed of about 100 megabits per second, in rare cases higher. If you read our router reviews on THG, you will see a lot of interesting numbers, where the discrepancy between connection and data transfer speeds is clearly visible.

In fact, having an 802.11g connection, you can expect in good conditions and at a short distance from the router to be somewhere around 20-25 Mbits per second, and at some distance it’s already 15, 8, or even less than these same megabits. If after some time Yota opens access at a higher speed, say, gives its subscribers the opportunity to pay 1,400 rubles for 40 megabits of speed, devices connected to the Yota Quanta LTE router via 802.11g may not receive any special advantages in speed, and devices those supporting 802.11n will be able to.

As for the real speed on the Yota LTE network with an LTE router Yota Quanta 1QDLZZZ0ST2, then it depends on a huge number of factors - the load on the BS, the congestion of the Wi-Fi range at the point of operation with the router, and the signal level. If you see some 15 Mb/s in the speed test results, divide this figure by 8 and get the number of megabytes per second. The peak now is 20 megabits. As I wrote above, at this speed, 1 gigabyte will take about seven minutes to download. Also, keep in mind that how exactly you pump greatly influences the practical speed - the speed can be significantly higher. Use download managers.
