The main political events of the year in the world. Relations between Russia and Europe. Have you been to CatCon?

The year 2017 was rich in various events, many of which became significant and discussed. What is special about this year? What events that occurred in 2017 have a good chance of going down in world history?

In January 2017, Donald Trump took the oath of office and became the rightful owner of the White House. His victory in the elections came as a complete surprise to many, and for several months after the announcement of the election results, mass rallies and protests did not subside in America. They took place in more than 150 US cities, as many Americans could not come to terms with Hillary Clinton’s defeat in the elections and the new government policy. Later, they even tried to blame... Russia for Trump's victory in the elections.

French presidential election

On May 7, the leader of the “Forward!” movement Emmanuel Macron won the second round of the French presidential election, significantly ahead of his rival, leader of the National Front party Marine Le Pen. More than 20 million people, or 66% of voters, cast their votes for the young politician.

Macron named the fight against terrorism, increasing police headquarters, increasing wages, lowering taxes and much more as his priorities as president. Soon after the elections, the young politician's ratings dropped significantly.

Referendum in Catalonia on independence from Spain

Brexit turned out to be a very contagious example, and now Catalonia has decided to hold a referendum for the independence of the autonomous community and secede from Spain. On October 1, 90% of Catalan residents voted in favor. President Carles Puigdemont signed the “Declaration of the Representatives of Catalonia” declaring independence.

It is clear that Madrid recognized the results of the referendum as illegal and banned it by court decision.

North Korean nuclear tests

The behavior of North Korea, or rather its nuclear tests, has seriously alarmed the whole world. Back in the spring, South Korean intelligence announced that Pyongyang had begun preparing to test a new type of nuclear device, and in early September, North Korea exploded a hydrogen bomb with a yield of 50 to 120 kilotons of TNT, which is about 8 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The tests “backfired” with tremors in different parts of the world with a magnitude of 5.7-6.4. The presidents of the United States and North Korea exchanged insults against each other. Experts fear the outbreak of active military action.

Olympics 2018 and doping scandal

In early December, the IOC commission decided the fate of athletes from Russia and the possibility of their participation in the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. Previously, The New York Times suggested that due to high-profile doping scandals involving Russian athletes, the International Olympic Committee could deprive Russia of the right to participate in the opening ceremony of the 2018 Olympics, as well as to perform its anthem and compete under its flag. According to the decision of the IOC Executive Committee, the membership of the ROC was temporarily suspended, and the Russian team was suspended from participation in the 2018 Games.

Pure Russian athletes were allowed to participate in competitions as neutral athletes.

Terrorist attack in the St. Petersburg metro

April 3 became a “black” day in the life of St. Petersburg. In the St. Petersburg metro, a suicide bomber detonated a homemade explosive device with a capacity of 300 grams of TNT and stuffed with metal elements. The terrorist attack killed 16 people, including the perpetrator himself. Another 87 people from 14 regions of the Russian Federation and three foreign countries were injured and injured.

New York terrorist attack

On October 31, in Manhattan, New York, 29-year-old native of Uzbekistan Safullo Saipo, driving a rented truck, drove into a crowd of people. Nine people died, more than 10 received injuries of varying severity. In a note that the terrorist left in the car, he said that he was carrying out this attack on behalf of ISIS (banned in Russia).

Tragedy in Las Vegas

Most of them came to a country music festival when 64-year-old American Stephen Paddock opened targeted fire from the window of his hotel room. More than 500 people were injured. The attacker himself, in whose room 23 firearms were found, shot himself during the police assault. The country's authorities recognized this tragedy as the largest mass murder in US history.

The military operation in Syria, the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution, as well as economic difficulties were remembered most by Russians in the past year, according to the results of a survey by the Romir holding.

According to the survey results, the operation in Syria was called the event of the year in Russia by almost a quarter of Russians (23%). 18% of citizens of our country considered the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution an important event, reports RIA Novosti.

Slightly less – 17% of Russians – recognized the difficult economic situation in the country as the key event. Sociologists note that the share of those who considered economic difficulties to be the most important event was much higher last year - it amounted to 40%. Romir noted that this year “there is a clear recovery” of the economy, and this “affected the general mood and assessments of our compatriots.”

Less than a tenth of those surveyed focused their attention on other events. Almost every 10th person ranked the resignation of a number of governors as the event of the year, 8% named the ongoing doping scandal with Russian athletes as the main event, 7% named the Confederations Cup.

The criminal case against the former Minister of Economic Development Alexey Ulyukaev was equated to the event of the year by only 4% of respondents. 2% of Russians each considered the celebration of the Year of Ecology in Russia, as well as the commissioning of the Zhuravka-Millerovo section of the railway bypassing Ukraine, to be the event of the year.

Separately, Russians were asked about the events of the year on a global scale. Thus, almost a third of respondents – 32% – called the war in Syria the main event of the outgoing 2017. 18% named the fight against the Islamic State as such. The share of such answers, sociologists note, is decreasing over time: two years ago, the fight against IS* attracted the attention of 42% of respondents, and last year the share dropped to 30%.

14% remembered the terrorist attacks in the USA and Europe, another 13% mentioned the inauguration of Donald Trump as US President. One in eight (12%) Russians attach importance to the nuclear tests conducted by North Korea this year.

The presidential elections in France and the referendum on the independence of Catalonia and the crisis that followed, as well as the entry of Apple iPhone 8 and IPhone X smartphones into the market, attracted the attention of only 1-2% of Russians.

The survey involved 2 thousand respondents aged 18 to 60 years and older, living in all types of cities and rural areas, in all federal districts.

Previously, the results of a similar survey were published by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion. VTsIOM also noted that for the third time in a row, the Russians' war in Syria was the main world event of 2017. On a national scale, such an event was called the construction of a bridge across the Kerch Strait.

Erdogan decided to become super president

1 Putin dismissed United Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin during the annual press conference in Moscow, December 14, 2017

Russian President Vladimir Putin kept the intrigue regarding his participation in the 2018 presidential elections almost until the last. He announced his decision to stand as a candidate on December 6 during a meeting with GAZ employees. However, in what format he will take part in the elections - as a candidate from the ruling party or as a self-nominee - it became known a week later.

“This will be a self-nomination,” the president said during the Grand Press Conference on December 14.

Putin’s decision not to run from the United Russia party, although this option was considered by experts, is to his advantage. Thus, he actually killed two birds with one stone. On the one hand, it has significantly expanded its own electorate, because not everyone who is ready to vote for Putin supports United Russia in the parliamentary elections. On the other hand, the creation of an initiative group demonstrated that the current president relies, first of all, not on party structures, but on all segments of the population.

At the same time, there are certain negative consequences of such a step, although not for Putin himself, but for United Russia. The decision of the head of state, in a sense, can be considered an acknowledgment of the decline in United Russia’s popularity among the population, which was besieged by experts - and even among the elites, the organization no longer enjoys the same authority as in the first years of its existence.

2 Trump decided for Jerusalem

On December 6, White House head Donald Trump announced the transfer of the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, effectively recognizing the latter as the capital of the Jewish state. The decision, initially controversial and conflict-provoking, provoked sharp criticism of Washington not only from Arab states, but even from long-time US partners in Europe.

However, given that the US Embassy will not move to Jerusalem today or tomorrow, it can be argued that Trump’s statement is more of a political nature in order to demonstrate support for the Israeli government. This was especially true against the backdrop of the rather vague policy of his predecessor Barack Obama towards this country. In general, “doing things differently than Obama” seems to be becoming a kind of political style for Trump.

However, if Obama’s position was rather caused by the desire - with varying degrees of effectiveness - to balance the US position in the Middle East, then Trump is not afraid to enter into confrontations with yesterday’s allies - especially with the oil-bearing Sunni monarchies. Moreover, the United States promised to remember the list of countries that, at a meeting of the UN General Assembly, would vote for a resolution condemning Washington’s decision, and then to reduce financial support for these states.

Well, the list, if it is created, will turn out to be quite voluminous. At a UNGA meeting on December 21, 128 countries condemned Trump for his decision on the status of Jerusalem.

3 The stronghold was broken, the troops were withdrawn

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at the training ground of the Central Aerodynamic Institute in Zhukovsky near Moscow after a test flight of the fifth-generation fighter T-50 developed by the Sukhoi company, 2010

Perhaps the phrase “the last stronghold of the Islamic State (banned in Russia) is about to fall” was encountered quite often in 2017. But by the end of the year, apparently, this became a reality, if only because Moscow and Washington began to argue with each other over who actually defeated the Islamic State.

At the same time, the fact remains that the Russian Aerospace Forces, which have been fighting terrorists in Syria since 2015, did often report successes in their work in 2017. This was largely facilitated by the creation of de-escalation zones, which the parties managed to agree on during the Astana negotiations.

On December 11, Vladimir Putin visited Syria for the first time, visited the Khmeimim airbase and congratulated the Russian officers on the successful completion of their combat missions. Thus, the President of the Russian Federation announced the completion of the operation in Syria and the beginning of the withdrawal of troops from this country. And although the election campaign has not yet begun, we can say that this decision will be a good foundation for its start in the future, because Putin has demonstrated that under his leadership the Russian army has undergone an effective modernization, which is capable of carrying out complex and large-scale combat missions in a fairly short time.

4 "Shared Prosperity" in Chinese

China no longer expects a broad partnership with the United States, especially after Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership in early 2017. The PRC, of course, had previously felt quite confident as the leader of the Asian region, but in the past year, Beijing’s interests began to extend not only beyond its borders, but also within the country itself. This is evidenced by two priorities highlighted by the Chinese leadership after the 19th CPC Congress - economics and foreign policy.

Xi Jinping is moving from an extensive model of economic development to an intensive one, that is, a shift in focus from high rates of economic growth to improving quality. Beijing is sensitive to the fact that economic growth is slowing down, and, therefore, it is no longer possible to ensure its strategic interests only through high growth rates, so the PRC is trying to quickly respond to internal challenges.

China is also quickly adjusting its policy towards external challenges. In contrast to the sharp reactions of the United States, Beijing is responding very restrainedly to Washington’s withdrawal from the TPP. Moreover, the intensity of Chinese diplomacy is increasing, which is expressed in promoting the idea of a multipolar world and “common prosperity.” China is also active in foreign investments - trade and economic “belts” and “roads” are increasingly tying various regions of the world to China.

5 Erdogan decided to become super president

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Recep Tayyip Erdogan came up with the idea of strengthening his position in Turkey’s political system much earlier, but the country’s president actually began implementing it only this year. In April, Turkey held a referendum on changing the constitution. In fact, 51.41% of the country's residents were in favor of turning Turkey from a parliamentary into a presidential republic, and Erdogan himself would receive broad powers and the opportunity to remain in power until 2029.

The vote was a turning point not only for Turkey's political system, but also for the country's foreign policy. European countries have expressed concerns that Ankara is retreating from democratic values, but Erdogan no longer seems particularly concerned. Ankara's relations with the European Union, for example, have not been going well for a very long time, and in Turkey itself, it seems that no one takes seriously the idea of joining the European bloc of countries. And in Brussels they are increasingly saying that Turkey - at least in the form in which it currently exists - has no place in the European family.

Turkey, at the same time, realizing that it needs a strong ally to cope with external and internal challenges, is becoming increasingly closer to Moscow, which is beneficial for Russia to protect its own interests and maintain stability in the region. We probably shouldn’t expect this emerging balance of power to change in any way in the coming year.
