II. Pharmacological properties
Diamond Eyes drops are an ophthalmic combined antibacterial drug for topical use in ophthalmology.
The drug has bactericidal, anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous properties.

Chlorhexidine bigluconate has a quickly manifested bactericidal effect on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, dermatophytes and lipophilic viruses.
The mechanism of its action is the binding of cations formed as a result of the dissociation of chlorhexidine salts by the walls of bacterial cells, disrupting the osmotic balance and membrane function of cells, which leads to a decrease in the level of cellular ATP and the death of the microorganism.

Taurine And succinic acid normalize redox processes, have a reparative effect, slow down the development of cataracts and prevent degenerative and dystrophic disorders in the retina and lens.

In terms of the degree of impact on the body, Diamond Eyes drops are classified as low-hazard substances (hazard class 4 according to GOST 12.1.007-76); in recommended doses they do not have local irritating or allergenic effects.

III. Application procedure
Eye drops Diamond eyes are prescribed to dogs and cats for daily hygienic treatment of the eyes (removal of dried exudate in the corners of the eyes), excessive lacrimation, inflammation of the mucous membrane and hyperemia of the vessels of the eyeball (red eye syndrome), for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes in acute and chronic catarrhal and serous-catarrhal conjunctivitis, after injuries and foreign bodies, as well as for the prevention of cataracts and age-related degenerative and dystrophic changes in the retina and cornea.

A contraindication to the use of Diamond Eyes drops is the increased individual sensitivity of the animal to the components of the drug.

For everyday eye care and for mild conjunctivitis, exudate and crusts are removed from the inner corner of the eye with a sterile gauze swab moistened with the drug, after which the drug is instilled into the conjunctival cavity for cats and dogs weighing up to 10 kg, 1 drop each, for dogs weighing more than 10 kg - 2 drops each. .

In a dog, excessive discharge from the eyes may indicate a disease directly in the organ of vision or in entire systems. You can guess why your dog's eyes are watering at home. However, if the amount of discharge increases or it becomes yellowish in color, it is best to take your dog to an ophthalmologist to determine the exact cause.

What discharge from the eyes is considered normal?

Many dogs experience mucous accumulation in the inner corners of their eyes after sleep. They can be transparent with a grayish or slightly reddish tint.

Also, dog breeds that have certain structural features are predisposed to excessive tearing. Discharge from the eyes can be observed throughout the day from an early age. These are the breeds:

  • with drooping eyelids (basset hound, sharpei, spaniel, mastiff, cane corso, etc.)
  • with bulging eyes (Pekingese, Japanese Chin, Chihuahua, Pugs, etc.)
  • with a brachycephalic muzzle structure (bulldogs, pugs, Pekingese, griffins, boxers, etc.)
  • with long hair on the head (Yorkshire terrier, Shih Tzu lapdog, poodle, etc.)

Older dogs develop a cloudy cornea as a result of a lack of tear fluid. This process is accompanied by mucopurulent discharge in the eyelash area and chronic conjunctivitis.

When should you be wary?

Excessive discharge from the eyes is not normal. Purulent discharge is yellow or greenish in color.

Possible causes of purulent discharge from the eyes in dogs:

  • viral infection (canine distemper, adenovirus);
  • improperly growing eyelashes;
  • chronic conjunctivitis.

Excessive mucous discharge is noted with:

  • contact allergies (dust, pollen, etc.);
  • food allergies;
  • dust getting into the eye;
  • injuries;
  • keratitis;
  • acute conjunctivitis.

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva (the outer mucous membrane of the eye). It is one of the most common lesions of the eye area, however, it rarely manifests itself as an independent disease.

In case of eye diseases, in addition to discharge, you may notice the following symptoms:

  • narrow palpebral fissure;
  • frequent blinking;
  • the dog rubs his eyelids with his paws;
  • redness;
  • edema.

When should you perform eye hygiene and how often?

  • the dog needs to clean its eyes as discharge accumulates in the corner of the eye (of any nature - mucous or with suppuration);
  • eye treatment is carried out before using medicinal ointments or drops. As a rule, an interval of at least 4-6 hours must be maintained between the use of such medications;
  • if chemicals come into contact with the eyes.

How to wash your dog's eyes?

Preparation

Before catching your pet and starting the procedure, prepare in advance:

  • solutions that will be needed
  • cotton pads or gauze pads,
  • ointment or drops prescribed by your doctor.

As a rule, preventive eye treatment does not cause pain or discomfort in the dog, so they behave calmly and patiently wait for the end of the event.

Washing procedure

Some medicinal drops may sting, so subsequent treatments will require some skill from the owner.

  • You will have to fix the dog's head yourself or ask someone to help. If the dog is small, it is most convenient to wrap it in a towel or blanket so that one head sticks out. This way, the dog will not receive any injuries and will not be able to make sudden movements, thereby preventing eye hygiene.
  • The dog's eyes are rubbed from the outer corner to the inner. Lightly moisten a cotton pad in the prepared treatment solution and, without pressing, wipe the eye. If you were unable to collect all the discharge the first time, you must use a new cotton swab or napkin for the next treatment! The second eye is also wiped with a separate clean cloth.
  • If there are dried crusts of pus on the eyes, they must first be soaked. To do this, gently dab the eye area with a cotton pad generously soaked in the prepared solution and after a while wipe the eyelashes and eyelids with a new damp cloth, removing crusts.
  • If the eye needs to be rinsed directly, you will need a sterile syringe without a needle with a volume of 5 to 20 ml (depending on the degree of contamination). The syringe is filled with a solution for rinsing in advance. Next, the dog’s eyelids need to be gently pulled apart with two fingers. The solution is applied to the upper outer corner of the eye from a syringe (without a needle!). After completing the procedure, the eyes can be blotted with a slightly damp cloth or cotton pad.

How to apply eye drops or ointment to a dog?

Eye drops or ointments are prescribed by a doctor for medicinal purposes. Before using such drugs, the dog's eyes must be washed.

  • To apply eye drops, you need to spread the dog’s eyelids with two fingers and drop the required amount of medicine from a sterile pipette into the upper outer corner of the eye. Next, you can make a couple of blinking movements with your fingers, closing and opening your eyelids so that the drops are distributed evenly.
  • To apply eye ointment, use your thumb to slightly pull down the dog’s lower eyelid and squeeze the required amount of ointment from the sterile tube spout directly onto the mucous membrane. And just as when applying drops, make several blinking movements with your eyelids.

If the doctor has prescribed several drugs, then before each use of different drops it is necessary to maintain an interval of at least 15-20 minutes.

A little about eye drops and ointments

Eye drops or ointments are prescribed to dogs for specific diseases or damage to the organ of vision. The active substances in their basis have a therapeutic effect, and they cannot be used for prophylactic purposes. Most often, dogs are prescribed the following eye drops, gels or ointments:

  • Tsiprovet– veterinary eye drops that contain an antibiotic. It is used for conjunctivitis and other inflammatory processes of the organ of vision, viral infections and infections caused by eye trauma. One of the most commonly used medications for keeping pets is eye drops for dogs. And this is quite understandable. For our four-legged friends, eyes are not just an organ of vision. It is also a “tool” for communicating with each other, with its owner. This is an indicator of the dog's health.

Various discharge from the eyes, their swelling, inflammation and other changes can indicate not only their infection, but also more serious diseases of the body. Therefore, caring owners always carefully monitor the condition of their pets’ eyes and will never ignore any changes in them. If your pet’s eyes are red and constantly watery, or, even worse, fester, he has lost his visual acuity, or his eyes just need to be washed, drops can always help. What do you need to know about them?

Canine ophthalmology medications

Owners of four-legged pets need to clearly understand that those medications that are used by people should not always be used to treat animals. They can only harm your student.

If you suspect he has one or another eye disease, you should rush him for a consultation at an animal clinic to determine an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate medicinal drops. Veterinary eye drops are medicinal and intended for caring for the visual organs.

But anything can happen in life. Therefore, dog owners themselves would do well to know about the most popular and currently used means that help treat and prevent eye diseases in pets. Let's look at them.

Diamond eyes for use in dogs

“Diamond Eyes” are drops for dogs that promote the symptomatic treatment of damage to the organs of vision, accompanied by inflammation, redness, itching, and excessive lacrimation. In addition, they prevent the penetration of various infections and changes in the retina of the eyes that occur in dogs as they age. They are also indicated in the treatment of mild forms of conjunctivitis. These effects are facilitated by the main active ingredients of these drops - succinic acid, taurine and chlorhexidine.

Since the medication is not potent, “Diamond Eyes” is recommended for daily use. They are not addictive.

Use them this way. Before starting treatment, as well as for daily care, remove all dried or purulent discharge and crusts from the corners of the eyes with a clean gauze swab, pre-slightly soaked in medication. And only after this, the drug is dripped in the following doses: animals weighing up to 10 kg - 1 drop, over 10 kg - 2. A similar manipulation is performed 1-3 times a day with a break of 5-10 days until a positive effect is achieved.

Eye drops for dogs of all ages Bars

"Bars" is an antibacterial drug for purely veterinary purposes, with multifaceted uses. Levomycetin, which is one of its components, is active against many microbes, certain viruses and strains of bacteria.

It is thanks to these components that Bars eye drops for dogs have an appropriate therapeutic effect in the treatment of many eye lesions and help prevent inflammation during injuries.

Before instilling the product, you should first carry out hygienic cleaning of the organs of vision. Then apply the medicine at the rate of 1-2 drops in one eye. Carry out the procedure 3-4 times a day for 1-2 weeks. If necessary, the course can be repeated.

When using Bars for treatment, care must be taken not to miss the next dose of the medicine. Indeed, in this case, its therapeutic effect may decrease. If this happens, the use of drops should be resumed in the prescribed manner.

Veterinary eye product Iris

“Iris” also refers exclusively to veterinary products. This is a highly effective ophthalmic drug based on gentamicin sulfate and polyvinylpyrrolidone. Thanks to their antibacterial properties, Iris eye drops for dogs are effective in relieving ailments of the cornea and conjunctiva. They are also used in cases of traumatic eye injuries and other lesions.

As in previous cases, the product is instilled after cleaning the organs of vision at the rate of: dogs weighing from 2 to 10 kg - 1 drop, from 10 to 20 kg - 2 drops and over 20 kg - 3 drops in one eye.

Antimicrobial drops for dogs Ciprovet

“Ciprovet” are drops whose main active ingredient is ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, which has a destructive effect on microbes, including those that are resistant to methicillin and gentamicin.

Ciprovet eye drops are used:

  • to get rid of symptoms of acute and chronic types of conjunctivitis and other eye lesions
  • infectious nature;
  • for the treatment of ailments of the visual organs that cannot be treated by other means
  • antimicrobial agents;
  • as a prophylactic drug to prevent eye ailments after injuries
  • and foreign objects entering the eye, as well as in connection with surgical interventions.

The remedy requires careful treatment of dogs with atherosclerosis, as well as disorders of blood circulation in the vessels of the brain. Like all medications of this type, drops are injected into the conjunctival cavity of the diseased eye, 1-2 drops 3-4 times a day for a week or two until a positive result is obtained. Before this, if required, the diseased organ is cleaned according to the method indicated above.

Drops for puffiness and dry eyes of dogs Optimmun

"Optimmune" - drops for all dogs, designed to relieve them of ailments caused by autoimmune processes in the animal's body. Mostly it is dryness of the cornea and swelling of the eyeball.

The main active ingredient of the drug - choline salicylate - quickly relieves inflammation, relieves pain, and moisturizes the mucous membrane. Usually they put 3-4 drops in their eyes three times a day. This drug is also available in the form of an ointment called “Optimmun”. Which one is more acceptable is up to you to choose. It is better to use a product that will irritate your pet less.

"Optimmun" is used until a positive result is obtained. Therapy can be long-term, it all depends on the severity of the disease. The main thing is that the effect of the medicine should be regular, continuous, and the use of additional drugs is not excluded. But in the presence of fungal and viral eye infections, this drug cannot be treated.

The main disadvantage of both drops and ointments is their high cost. This is precisely the main reason for replacing them with a cheaper analogue - “Tseprovin”.

Brief conclusion

When purchasing the above medications to treat ophthalmological lesions of your pets’ organs of vision, do not forget about the rules for storing them. If they are needed in the refrigerator, then find a place for them there. After all, failure to comply with recommendations can make treatment not only useless, but also dangerous for him.

What are eye drops used for?

Transparent, liquid discharge from a pet's eyes does not always mean the presence of conjunctivitis in a small furry cat.

Puppies and kittens (especially breeds with a flattened muzzle) require, at first, constant hygienic care for their eyes.

Instilling prophylactic drops and washing the animal's eyes will quickly return the pet to a healthy appearance and good mood.

Another thing is purulent, cloudy, thick discharge, which means an infectious bacteriological, viral eye disease.

Do not treat your pet yourself; immediately contact your veterinarian for advice. A correct diagnosis and effective drops will quickly relieve acute inflammation and guarantee a successful course of treatment:

  • conjunctivitis;
  • inflammation of the tear ducts;
  • herpes;
  • toxoplasmosis;
  • chlamydia.

Chronic (blepharitis), age-related (cataracts), structural disorders of eye function (entropion) require constant, long-term use of medications.

The medicinal and hygiene products presented in this category belong to veterinary pharmaceutical products, are certified, have passed clinical trials, and are safe for the health of pets.

Eye drops in dogs are used to treat various infectious inflammations, corneal ulcers and even dry eyes. If your pet has one of the above conditions, your veterinarian may prescribe topical medications such as eye drops or ointments. To properly administer the medication, you will first need to prepare everything needed for the procedure and calm (or restrain) your dog before treating his eyes.

Steps

Part 1

Preparation for the procedure

    Wash your hands first. This is a good practice to get used to. Since you will be treating your pet's eye area, which is sensitive to dust, debris and foreign bacteria, you cannot allow your dog's vision to be accidentally damaged due to your negligence. So be sure to wash your hands with antibacterial soap.

    Prepare the medicine. Regardless of whether you use eye drops or ointment, the medicine should be opened and kept near you. Most likely, the dog will not be delighted with the treatment and will resist. Therefore, you will need to ensure that you are as agile as possible.

    Call someone to help you. It all largely depends on the individual dog. If your dog is lazy and good-natured, you may be able to give him the drops yourself. If you expect that the pet will resist, twist, or even bite, you will need an assistant who will additionally restrain the dog.

    Restrain your dog securely. If you are alone, it is a good idea to treat the eyes by pressing the dog's pelvis against a wall or some piece of large furniture. This will make it more difficult for your pet to back away from you.

    • If you have a helper, he can stand behind the dog or simply hold his pelvis between his knees. The helper should hold the dog's head with his free hands. If the dog is small, it will be easier to place it on the table first.
  1. If necessary, consider alternative methods of restraining the animal. If your pet's paws are too strong for him to treat his eyes while standing, try placing him on his side. Have a helper press the dog's paws to the floor. Likewise, if your dog tends to snap or bite when you medicate his eyes, it might be wise to muzzle him. It will limit the dog's ability to open its mouth. Use a muzzle if you cannot get your pet into a relaxed state.

    • Ideally, you will not need any of the above containment methods. Try not to expose your dog to unnecessary stress unless absolutely necessary. If you take care to make the treatment experience pleasant for your pet, he will behave more easily in the future.
  2. Gently cleanse the area around the eyes. Before applying medication to your pet's eyes, be sure to clean the area around the eyes. Grasp the dog's muzzle from below with one hand and slightly lift its head up. Gently wipe away any discharge from the eyes with a damp cotton ball or paper towel.

    • To prevent re-infection, immediately throw away the materials you used to clean your pet's eyes.
  3. Apply eye drops. Without touching the dog's eye with the nose of the bottle with drops (it is best to keep it at a distance of about 3 mm from the eye), drop the required number of drops into the conjunctival sac or directly onto the eyeball.

    Use eye ointment. This procedure is practically no different from using drops. Fix the dog's head. Without touching the eye with the tip of the tube, squeeze a strip of ointment into the conjunctival sac. Gently close your dog's eye and lightly massage the eyelid with your finger to distribute the medication throughout the eyeball.

    • If the dog jerks and you are sure that the medicine did not get into his eye at all, take a deep breath, wipe off the ointment that got in the wrong place and start all over again. If you are patient and persistent, it will be easier for you.
  4. Gently massage your dog's eyelids. This will allow the medicine to be distributed better. Do this very lightly and for as long as the dog can tolerate it. It is ideal to gently massage your eyelids for about 10 to 15 seconds to distribute the medication evenly throughout the eye.

    Repeat the procedure with the second eye and subsequently use the medicine according to the instructions. Follow your veterinarian's recommendations. Some eye drops and ointments require application every two hours, others twice a day, and some only once a day. Usually all the necessary instructions are given in the instructions supplied with the medicine.

    • If your veterinarian tells you to treat both of your dog's eyes, even though only one of them is inflamed, follow your veterinarian's instructions. It is likely that treating a healthy eye will be a preventive measure so that the infection does not penetrate into it.
  5. Give your dog a treat when you're done. The more positive the treatment experience is for your dog, the easier it will be for you to treat his eyes in the future. Everything depends only on the development of a positive conditioned reflex. It will help your dog respond well to treatment.

    Don't let your dog rub his eyes. If your dog's eyes were irritated before the procedure, medication should help relieve the condition. However, in some cases, the eye drops and ointments themselves can be an additional source of irritation. Regardless, do your best to stop your pet from rubbing his eyes. He may try to do this with his paws or simply start rubbing his face on the carpet. Stay close to your dog and, if necessary, restrain him to allow the medicine to take effect.
