Does chamomile cause. The healing properties of chamomile oil. Side effects when treated with chamomile

Synonyms: chamomile, common chamomile, wild chamomile.

Plant characteristics: annual fragrant herbaceous plant with a branched stem. Chamomile differs from other species in its strong aromatic odor and hollow inside oblong-conical receptacle.

Description. An annual herbaceous plant of the aster family (Asteraceae) with an erect, very branched stem 25-50 cm high. The root is taproot, thin, light brown in color. The leaves are twice pinnately dissected into narrow linear parts, alternate, 2-5 cm long, sessile. Flower baskets consist of marginal white ligulate and central yellow tubular flowers with a pleasant smell, on long pedicels. Receptacle without films and bristles, bare, hollow. At the beginning of flowering it is flat, and at the end it is conical, which is why it differs from the receptacle of other daisies, which do not have medicinal properties (those daisies have larger flower baskets, with a filled rather than hollow (hollow) receptacle). The fruit is a slightly bent small achene. Weight of 1000 seeds - 0.04-0.06 g. Blooms from May to late autumn.

Biological features. Chamomile is a light- and moisture-loving plant. Its growing season is very short: 60-70 days from seed germination to flowering, and the full development cycle lasts 3-4 months. The plant is unpretentious and can grow well on sandy and loamy soils; heavy, damp, clayey soils are unsuitable for it. Increased soil moisture during flowering has a detrimental effect on the plant - the number of flowers decreases, the content of essential oil decreases, and the yield sharply decreases. Freshly harvested seeds have a sowing germination rate (60-70%), which increases to 80-90% only after 2-3 months. 5-6 years after storage, the seeds become unsuitable for sowing. Seed germination begins at a temperature of 2-4 °C, the optimal temperature is 20-25 °C. Shoots appear first when the top layer of soil is moistened. For complete swelling of seeds, 450-470% water is needed in relation to their weight. Therefore, obtaining successful shoots is possible only if the seeds are well supplied with moisture in the first 5-7 days after sowing. It should also be taken into account that the biological feature of chamomile is the strong shedding of its seeds. Sprouting late in the fall, chamomile develops as a winter crop and very much litters the fields.

Places of growth. Chamomile grows in meadows, fields, and near roads as a weed; it prefers sandy soils.

Spreading. Chamomile grows in small thickets almost throughout Ukraine, in gardens, vacant lots, and near roads. Relatively large tracts remained only in the Sivash part of Crimea and the Black Sea part of the Kherson region, in saline meadows and fallow lands, as well as in crops. Chamomile is cultivated. In addition to medicinal chamomile, chamomile is also harvested in natural conditions.

Chemical composition. Chamomile flowers contain about 0.8% bluish-colored essential oil, the main component of which is the specific biologically active substance chamazulene. In addition to the essential oil, chamomile flowers contain apihecin glycosides, coumarin compounds (umbeliferon and its methyl ester herniarin), sitosterol, choline, vitamin C, (3-carotene, organic acids, polysaccharides, mineral salts. It should be noted that chamomile has chemical races, for example, those that do not contain prochamazulene or bisabolol, so the high quality of raw materials can only be guaranteed by the cultivation of varieties with a high content of these compounds.

The medicinal raw materials are flowers in baskets without pedicels, collected at the beginning of flowering, when the marginal reed flowers in the baskets are located horizontally. Collection is carried out in dry weather. Raw materials (baskets) are quickly dried in a well-ventilated area or in dryers at a temperature of 40°C.

Agrotechnics of cultivation. Site selection. Clean areas without weeds are allocated for chamomile, because its crops are low and easily drowned out by them. More suitable are fertile chernozem loamy soils of medium texture. The best predecessors are pure fallow, winter crops that grow on pure fallow, row crops and leguminous crops.

Soil cultivation. If a field of winter crops is allocated for chamomile, then after harvesting they are peeled, and in September plowed land is plowed to a depth of 22-25 cm with simultaneous harrowing. When weeds appear, 1-2 cultivations are carried out to a depth of 5-7 cm. If the predecessors were row crops, then they are plowed immediately after they are harvested. Pre-sowing work should be carried out especially diligently to obtain uniform shoots. In addition to cultivating and harrowing, grinding and rolling are also used.

Fertilizer application. For the main plowing or more often for the previous crop, 30-40 t/ha of manure is applied. If there is little manure on the farm, then good results are obtained by simultaneously applying organic and mineral fertilizers at the rate of 15-20 t/ha of manure and 45 kg/ha of the active substance of phosphorus fertilizers. In spring they are fed with nitrogen fertilizers (25-30 kg/ha).

Reproduction. Chamomile can be sown in three times: in early spring, 1-1.5 months before the onset of frost (winter sowing) or a few days before frost (winter sowing). It is better to sow in winter, but good results are also obtained with winter sowing. Seeding rate - 2.0-2.5 kg/ha; and for winter sowing - 3 kg/ha. The depth of planting of seeds is 0.5-1 cm; during winter sowing they are not planted. Sowing is carried out in rows with row spacing of 45 cm.

Plantation care. The first digging of row spacing is carried out at the emergence of seedlings with cultivators equipped with paws (razors) so as not to cover very small plant seedlings with soil. When the seedlings become stronger, the weeds in the rows are pulled out by hand. Subsequently, the field is maintained in a loose state, free of weeds.

Harvest. Chamomile flowers are collected at the beginning of flowering using special iron scoop combs or by hand, grabbing the flowers between the fingers of the right hand and at the same time tearing off the long stems and pedicels with the left hand. Using combs to collect flowers is much faster, but the quality of the raw materials is better when collected by hand. At first, flowers are collected every 1-2 days, and later - every 4-5 (up to 6 times per summer).

Drying. The collected flowers are laid out in a thin layer at the rate of 1 kg of raw flowers per 1 m2 of drying area. Typically, chamomile is dried in the shade, in attics under an iron roof or in fire dryers at a temperature of 45 ° C. The average yield of dry baskets is 5-10 c/ha.

Package. Officinalis chamomile should be packed in damp weather, because completely dry flowers crumble very much. Raw materials are packed in plywood or wooden boxes of 20 kg. The inside is lined with wrapping paper.

Quality requirements. Raw materials must meet the requirements of State Pharmacopoeia XI (FS-7, pp. 239-241).

To obtain seed material, special areas are allocated where elite seeds are sown. All work in these areas is carried out at a high agrotechnical level and in optimal time frames. If it is not possible to allocate special areas, then the best areas are allocated on industrial plantations with good, even grass stand, free of weeds.

They begin to collect flower baskets when the outermost white flowers of most plants move downwards and the receptacle takes on an elongated shape. Chamomile is cut in the morning, when the dew has subsided, and tied into small sheaves, which are immediately sent under a shed to dry. After drying, the sheaves are threshed and cleaned on a sieve with holes with a diameter of 1.5-2 mm. Raw materials (seeds) should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area, in bins or bags. The average yield is approximately 0.8-1.0 c/ha.

Application

Chamomile is used as an infusion orally as an antispasmodic for diseases of the digestive system, spastic colitis, gastritis, to stimulate bile secretion, and is also used to rinse the mouth and throat for sore throats and laryngitis. For colitis and hemorrhoids, it is used in the form of emulsion enemas.

Chamomile looks beautiful among other wild plants, is very popular among doctors and traditional healers, and is in demand in cosmetology. It is also used for fortune telling by lovers, waiting with bated breath that the last plucked petal will turn out to be a happy indication of reciprocity.

The valuable qualities of the plant were appreciated a long time ago, back in the time of Avicenna, and mostly ancient recipes for healing infusions and extracts have reached the modern world almost unchanged. Yes, they do not require adjustment, as they help in many troubles related to human health.

Chamomile is an annual essential oil plant. Classified as a member of the Asteraceae family. It grows not only in steppe zones, along roads, on hillsides, near reservoirs, in wastelands, but also as a cultivated plant. Chamomile is cultivated especially often, as it can help people with a wide variety of diseases, providing a quick but very mild, gentle effect.

It is those plants whose stems are from 20 to 40 cm in height, no more, that have medicinal properties. Any violation, greater or lesser, indicates that the plant:

  • was in unacceptable conditions during growth;
  • sick;
  • did not receive enough sunlight, which means many beneficial substances are lost.

The stem of chamomile is very thin, with a cavity inside along its entire length, but straight. The leaves are arranged alternately along it, their shape is narrow-linear with pointed dissections. The length of the leaves ranges from 2 to 5 cm.

The root system is quite weak, since the root itself is thin and has few branches. The rhizome has a brown color. It is difficult for chamomile to hide among other plants due to the distinctive properties of its small, multiple flowers. They have a bright yellow center, framed in a circle by individual white petals. Small seeds begin to ripen in flower baskets, and with their help reproduction occurs.

Nuances of the procurement process

If you need to collect pharmaceutical chamomile, the main thing is not to confuse it with other members of the family. The healing chamomile has snow-white and narrow petals, located horizontally on the receptacle along the circumference. When the flowering period comes to an end, the petals begin to lean towards the stem. In many types of chamomile, the head of the flower basket is flat, but in the chamomile, it has a pronounced conical shape, the tubular head is hollow.

Only flower baskets are prepared. They need to be collected directly at the stage of full bloom; observation will help determine the correct period: if the lingual flowers are in a horizontal position. The collection time falls from June to September, but at the very end of the season, picked chamomile does not contain all the necessary microelements, and the percentage of essential oil in it is also significantly reduced. Therefore, such raw materials are considered useless and are practically not used.

During harvesting, it is best to choose inflorescences that have a hemispherical receptacle, white petals are located horizontally or slightly raised upward. Their advantages are that they will not crumble during processing, and their healing properties will be the best. You should not be greedy and collect overripe inflorescences if the white marginal flowers have already dropped down.

To harvest chamomile you need good weather. If there is a lot of humidity outside or it starts to rain, you will have to wait out this time. The plant is not harvested until the dew has disappeared.

Basically, sharply sharpened knives and scissors are used to collect chamomile. If the plants are pulled out entirely, then reproduction will not occur, and next year the entire plantation will turn into wasteland. When cutting, you should ensure that the container contains only healthy and intact inflorescences, and leaves and flowers affected by various diseases are not included.

For collection, in most cases, they take baskets or boxes with low sides. The main thing is that the inflorescences do not wrinkle or become deformed.

Chamomile can absorb negative environmental influences. Therefore, you should not pay attention to the abundance of plants near highways, chemical plants, landfills, farms and other dangerous places.

When the crop is harvested and delivered home, it urgently needs to be dried. For this procedure, a place must be chosen in the shade, for example, in the attic. You can build special canopies. It is important that the dim rays of the sun dry out the inflorescences, destroying the medicinal properties, and that the chamomile gradually becomes dry with the help of a small draft. You need to spread the plant in a very thin layer on clean paper or natural fabric. Periodically, you will need to turn the inflorescences over so that access to fresh air helps dry them more efficiently. After 7 – 10 days the process is considered complete.

You also need to know how to store the plant. The inflorescences are hidden in glass containers, clean canvas bags or a cardboard box and placed in a room with low humidity and good ventilation. If these conditions are met, chamomile will faithfully serve the health of others for two years.

The leaves and roots of chamomile do not have as many valuable substances as the inflorescences. Therefore, medicine (both official and folk) actively uses flowers.

They contain:

  • bioflavonoids;
  • various acids - primarily caprylic, salicylic, caprylic;
  • coumarins;
  • polyines;
  • tannins and protein substances;
  • essential oil. It has a blue color and a very rich composition, but there is no pungent odor;
  • various vitamins;
  • polysaccharide compounds;
  • sesquiterpenoids. Their content is very high - up to 50 percent;
  • bitterness, mucus and gum;
  • phytosterol. Steroidal alcohol is beneficial especially for the skin, slowing down the aging process, and for hair.

What diseases can chamomile be used for?

Flower inflorescences are, of course, not a panacea for patients, but they greatly facilitate the treatment of many ailments. This is for example:

  • inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract or liver;
  • spasms that occur in the stomach or intestines;
  • neuroses;
  • gynecological problems;
  • colds;
  • flatulence.

The plant has many useful qualities. Relieves inflammation and is a choleretic agent, facilitates the removal of gases accumulated in the intestines and relieves cramps, stops bleeding and fights bacteria, strengthens the immune system and restores performance.

In the old days, an antidote for snake bites was prepared entirely from the plant. There is a variety of chamomile - Caucasian. It is actively used as an insecticide in the fight against harmful insects such as flies, mosquitoes, lice, bedbugs and cockroaches. It is also used in the form of a powder prepared from flower baskets in the fight against vegetable pests and even barn pests.

Based on pharmaceutical chamomile, there are medicinal preparations that act as an antispasmodic of smooth muscles, have antidepressant properties or reduce the tone of blood vessels. Processed inflorescences are mainly used in the form of tea, infusions, and extracts. The essential oil of the plant is also widely used.

  1. Disorders of the biliary system.
  2. Diseases of the stomach with pronounced damage to the mucous membrane, occurring in acute or chronic form.
  3. Serious problems associated with inflammatory processes in the genitourinary system.
  4. Diseases of the respiratory system, if, in addition, they are accompanied by a severe cough, swelling of the mucous membranes.
  5. Diseases of the skin and tissues. The accumulation of beneficial substances in chamomile helps stop the growth of bacteria and the development of inflammation.

With the help of chamomile, you can relieve anxious and hysterical conditions, reduce the presence of pain, especially when it comes to headaches, toothaches, and painful menstruation.

Important! Typically, treatment with chamomile lasts a long time - up to three months and is a whole course if the patient’s body does not respond with an allergic reaction. Patients usually do not experience addiction during treatment.

The essential oil of the plant also has many medicinal qualities. First of all, it has the following properties:

  • anti-inflammatory;
  • antihistamine;
  • bactericidal.

Doctors assign the leading role in the effectiveness of the effect on the sick body to a special substance contained in chamomile essential oil. This is chamazulene. By the way, it is he who colors the oil, which is a viscous, dense liquid, dark blue. During storage, the substance is oxidized by atmospheric oxygen, and then the oil first turns green and then brown.

It is not for nothing that doctors and traditional healers paid close attention to essential oil. Chamomile oil:

  • promotes vasodilation;
  • has a diaphoretic effect;
  • relieves gas formation in the intestines;
  • stimulates the digestion process;
  • is diaphoretic and antibacterial;
  • increases the body's defenses.

The usual course is 7 days. Mix 2 drops of oil with a teaspoon of honey. Take twice a day. If necessary, wash it down with boiled water. It is necessary to monitor the body's reaction, as some negative effects may occur, for example, nausea and vomiting, slight dizziness. Since such symptoms may occur, chamomile essential oil is not recommended for use by pregnant women and breastfeeding women, children under 7 years of age, or if any illness is in an acute stage. In this case, consultation with a specialist is necessary.

First of all, tea and chamomile decoction are used at home as local or systemic treatment. For external use there are poultices and compresses, douching and enemas, rinsing and washing the mouth and throat, baths and baths.

All these procedures bring good results if:

  • there has been a violation of the skin, for example, a burn, ulcer, long-term non-healing wound, frostbite;
  • bothered by constant inflammatory acne on the skin;
  • inflammatory processes in the eye mucosa have begun;
  • hemorrhoids hurt and become inflamed;
  • a menstrual cycle disorder has occurred or cervical erosion has been detected;
  • a dislocation or sprain occurred;
  • an attack of gout or rheumatism began;
  • I am bothered by severe sweating on the palms and soles.

Beneficial properties of chamomile for the body

The composition of chamomile is striking in its diversity - it contains essential oils, vitamins, fatty acids, polysaccharides, flavonoids, phytosterol and other useful components. This rich composition allows chamomile to be used in the fight against various diseases.

Chamomile in cosmetology

Chamomile medicines are very useful for the beauty of hair, nails and skin. Get into the habit of rinsing your hair with chamomile decoction after each wash - this will make your strands smooth, shiny and healthy. Moreover, chamomile is a natural lightener that will change the color of your curls by half a tone in just a few uses. Chamomile suppresses the work of the sebaceous glands and relieves strands of excess oil.

Numerous masks and compresses for the face are made based on chamomile decoction. This helps to cope with various inflammations - comedones, pimples, boils. The whitening effect of chamomile allows the plant to cope with age spots, freckles and unwanted tanning. Chamomile is also used to improve skin tone so that it becomes more youthful and firm. Chamomile ice is very effective and popular - the decoction is frozen in the form of cubes and rubbed on the face. It helps get rid of wrinkles, dark circles and bags under the eyes.

To get the maximum beneficial properties from chamomile inflorescences, the medicine must be prepared correctly.

  1. Camomile tea. This is the easiest and fastest way to prepare chamomile. An infusion can be made from fresh or dried inflorescences. This will help strengthen the immune system and cope with inflammation of the throat and stomach.
  2. Chamomile decoction. This is a recipe for a more concentrated and stronger composition, which is best used externally. Sakura is most often associated with Japan and its culture. Picnics under the canopy of flowering trees have long become an integral attribute of welcoming spring in the Land of the Rising Sun. The financial and academic year here begins on April 1, when the magnificent cherry blossoms bloom. Therefore, many significant moments in the life of the Japanese take place under the sign of their flowering. But sakura also grows well in cooler regions - certain species can be successfully grown even in Siberia.

Agriculture is one of those types of human activity, the successful outcome of which is not always directly proportional to the efforts made. Unfortunately, nature does not necessarily act as our ally when growing plants, and often, on the contrary, even throws up new challenges. Increased reproduction of pests, abnormal heat, late return frosts, hurricane winds, drought... And one of the springs gave us another surprise - a flood.

Let me confess my love today. In love with... lavender. One of the best unpretentious, evergreen and beautifully flowering shrubs that can be successfully grown in your garden. And if anyone thinks that lavender is a Mediterranean or at least southern resident, then you are mistaken. Lavender grows well in more northern regions, even in the Moscow region. But to grow it, you need to know some rules and features. They will be discussed in this article.

Once you have tried such an invaluable product as pumpkin, it is difficult to stop searching for new recipes for serving it to the table. Korean pumpkin, despite its pungency and spiciness, has a fresh and delicate taste. After cooking, you will need to cover the salad and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. My nutmeg pumpkin is very juicy and sweet, so there is no need to mash it. If the pumpkin is of a different variety, you can mash it with your hands so that it slightly releases the juice.

Lettuce, as the earliest and most unpretentious green crop, has always been held in high esteem by gardeners. Most gardeners usually start spring planting by sowing lettuce, parsley and radishes. Recently, the desire for healthy eating and a large selection of greens in supermarkets have forced gardeners to think about which of these plants can be grown in their beds? In this article we will talk about nine of the most interesting, in our opinion, varieties of salad.

Pollock is best prepared as a casserole, separating the fillet from the skin and bones. Pieces of fish are mixed with a colorful assortment of vegetables and topped with a sauce of cheese, sour cream and eggs. This fish casserole has a presentable appearance, and its taste is a bizarre mixture of subtle nuances. Vegetables and fillets will be soaked in sour cream, the cheese will harden into a golden brown crust, and the eggs will bind all the ingredients together. Pieces of fish are generously sprinkled with Italian herbs, and pollock acquires an unusual piquancy.

Despite the fact that calendar spring begins in March, you can truly feel the awakening of nature only with the appearance of flowering plants in the garden. Nothing signals the arrival of spring as eloquently as clearings of blooming primroses. Their appearance is always a small celebration, because winter has receded and a new gardening season awaits us. But, besides spring primroses, there is still something to see and admire in the garden in the month of April.

Rapidly growing and turning into wild thickets, hogweed disrupts the existing ecosystem and suppresses all other plants. Essential oils contained in the fruits and leaves of hogweed cause severe forms of dermatitis. At the same time, it is much more difficult to control than other common weeds. Fortunately, today a product has appeared on the market that can quickly rid your area of most weeds, including hogweed.

Carrots come in different colors: orange, white, yellow, purple. Orange carrots are dominated by beta-carotene and lycopene, the yellow color is due to the presence of xanthophylls (lutein); White carrots have a lot of fiber, and purple ones contain anthocyanin, beta and alpha carotenes. But, as a rule, gardeners choose carrot varieties for sowing not by the color of the fruit, but by the timing of their ripening. We will tell you about the best early, middle and late varieties in this article.

We recommend a fairly easy pie recipe with a delicious chicken and potato filling. An open pie with chicken and potatoes is an excellent hearty dish that is suitable for a hearty snack; it is very convenient to take a couple of pieces of this pastry on the road. The pie is baked in the oven for one hour at 180 degrees. After this, we lay it out on a wooden surface, having first released it from the mold. It is enough to slightly cool the baked goods and you can start tasting.

The long-awaited spring for many indoor plants is the period of the start of active growing season, and for most - the return of their decorative properties. While admiring the young leaves and emerging shoots, you should not forget that spring is also a great stress for all indoor plants. Sensitive to changes in conditions and universal, all indoor crops face much brighter lighting, changes in air humidity and temperature conditions.

You can easily prepare homemade Easter cake with cottage cheese and candied fruits, even without any pastry experience. You can bake Easter cake not only in a special form or in a paper mold. For your first culinary experiences (and more), I advise you to take a small cast-iron frying pan. Easter cake in a frying pan will not turn out as high as in a narrow pan, but it never burns and is always well baked inside! Cottage cheese dough made with yeast turns out airy and aromatic.

It is also interesting because its fruits (pumpkins) are used for food by young, not ripe ones (greens). This means that you don’t have to wait for the harvest to ripen, and from late spring to autumn you can have fresh vegetables on your menu. In your garden beds, it is better to grow varieties and hybrids of zucchini that are resistant to diseases and changes in weather conditions. This eliminates unwanted treatments and allows you to get a harvest in any weather. It is these varieties of zucchini that will be discussed in this article.

In the middle zone, April is the time when the first flowering of plants in gardens and parks begins. The constant soloists of the spring that has come into its own are the bulbous primroses. But even among the ornamental shrubs you can find those that will delight you with fragrant flowers that enliven the still inconspicuous garden. The main riot of beautifully flowering ornamental shrubs occurs in the month of May, and most of them, as a rule, bloom in mid-May.

Update: October 2018

Chamomile or medicinal chamomile is a ubiquitous annual of the genus Matricaria of the Asteraceae family. The plant can be found on various soils in Eurasia and North America and other extratropical regions of the earth. From Latin the name is translated as Uterine Herb, since previously it was used mainly to treat female diseases.

The once wild plant is now actively cultivated by humans, providing medicinal value and being a sought-after medicinal raw material. In addition to the active component of many medicines, it is part of shampoos, creams, lotions, soaps and other cosmetics.

Chamomile: description of the plant

The herbaceous plant has an average height of 20-40 cm; a large stem length indicates a lack of sunlight during the growth period. The stem is thin and erect, hollow inside. The leaves are 2-5 cm long and have an alternate arrangement, sitting on the stem. The narrow-linear leaf has typical dissections with pointed lobes. The root is taproot, practically unbranched, thin. Small flower baskets have white petals on the edge and yellow tubular flowers in the middle.

Distinctive features of chamomile from its other types

The petals on the flower basket of chamomile are horizontal or drooping down. The receptacle itself has a characteristic conical convex shape. The head of the flower is hollow.

Chemical composition of chamomile

Chamomile flowers:

Dry baskets contain up to 1% (0.1-0.8%) essential oil, which is called chamomile. The oil is blue in color and characterized by a rich composition. The most valuable component is azulene chamazulene, the content of which ranges from 1-9%. Chamazulene is synthesized from the lactones matricin and matricarin during the process of steam distillation of raw materials. It has pronounced anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory and bacteriostatic activity.

Up to 50% of the composition are other sesquiterpenoids: farnesene, bisabolol, monoterpene myrcene, etc.

Medicinal properties of chamomile

Preparation and storage

Medicinal raw materials for internal use are chamomile flowers. They are harvested in dry weather from June to August. It is during this period that the highest concentration of essential oil in the plant is observed.

For external use, chamomile is harvested whole, collected at the same time as the flowers. The raw materials are dried in the shade, ensuring good ventilation of the room. If a dryer is used, the maximum air temperature should be 40 C. During drying, do not turn the raw materials over so that the petals from the flowers do not fall off.

Dried raw materials can be used for 1 year, provided they are stored in clothes or paper bags in a dark and dry place. The plant has a rather strong specific odor, so you should not store raw materials next to products that absorb odors.
