It is probably difficult to find a person who would not love a holiday in Thailand. If you have already been to the bustling tourist city of Pattaya, popular Phuket, Russified Samui and don’t know where to go in Thailand, it’s time to go to Koh Phangan to explore new horizons. I offer our detailed author’s route to Koh Phangan in Thailand, which will allow you to explore everything corners of the island and get a lot of positive emotions.

Getting to the island is quite long and tiring, so I wouldn’t recommend going for less than 2 weeks. You can read how to get to Koh Phangan from Bangkok in our article:

The route is designed in such a way that in 2-3 weeks you can see the sights of Koh Phangan and the best beaches of Koh Phangan. You will visit all the waterfalls of the island, fashionable parties on Koh Phangan, interesting cafes and reggae bars of Koh Phangan. You will see the best sunsets on Koh Phangan, visit temples, national parks, entertainment centers, yoga centers and saunas.

This route is suitable for active people who do not like to sit in one place, but like to combine a beach holiday on Koh Phangan with an excursion. Despite the active holiday, there will be plenty of time to explore the beaches of Koh Phangan. Read our blog article (there is a map of Koh Phangan with beaches)

The route around Koh Phangan for 2-3 weeks is mainly aimed at those people who, for whatever reason, do not plan to rent a bike (renting a bike on Koh Phangan is only for those who know how to drive it well). Therefore, for the first half of our vacation we will travel by taxi and transfers and change several accommodation options. And for the second half of your vacation, I advise you to rent a car on Koh Phangan for 6 days and choose one base for overnight stays (renting a car in Koh Phangan is an ideal solution for those who don’t have a bike).

DAY 1: Arrival at Koh Phangan

(overnight on Haad Rin)

The road to Koh Phangan is long and tiring, so we are not planning anything active on this day. For the first stop, I suggest choosing the Haad Rin area - this is the most popular and noisy place on the island of Koh Phangan, Thailand. It is on Haad Rin Phangan Beach that the famous Full Moon Party is held. Haad Rin has the most developed infrastructure, a large selection of housing and entertainment. Haad Rin is quite close to Thong Sala, the journey from the pier will take no more than 30 minutes. This is an ideal place to get comfortable, acclimatize and start getting to know the island.

Bright boats in the vicinity of Tong Sala

DAY 2: Rest on Haad Rin

exploring the beaches in the area (overnight on Haad Rin)

We take a break from the road, bask on the beach, and then I suggest hanging out in some cafe or bar. There are 3 beaches in the Haad Rin area:

  • beach Haad Rin Nok(Haad Rin Nok) or otherwise sunrise beach or Full Moon Party beach (there is a wide beach strip, pleasant depth, but there are a lot of people)
  • Had Rin Nai beach(Haad Rin Nai) or sunset beach in a different way (there is no beach as such, only a narrow coastal strip. But it is quiet here and you can watch beautiful sunsets)
  • Lila beach(Haad Seekantang). The most picturesque beach in the area and one of my favorites on the island. Sloping palm trees and hammocks by the water are ideal for lazy relaxation.

All beaches are within walking distance, and you can easily choose the beach to your liking. Then you can go to a master class in Same Same school and learn how to cook Thai cuisine. This is the most famous and popular Thai cooking school on Koh Phangan.

In the afternoon, you can walk around the local shops and buy the missing beach accessories: T-shirts, swimsuits, etc. Further, moving deeper into the island, you will no longer find such variety, so if you need to buy something, now is the time to do it.

In the evening you can go to the popular food court in Thong Sala. An inexpensive and tasty dinner is guaranteed. Of course, this is true if you are in a car or bike. There is no public transport on Koh Phangan, and transfers are quite expensive (the fare is not per car, but per person, and bargaining with taxi drivers is almost impossible).

DAY 3: trekking + parties

(overnight on Haad Rin)

On this day, I propose to go on a little adventure and trek through the jungle to the neighboring beaches Haad Yuan(Haad Yuan) Haad Tien(Haad Thian) and Haad Wai Nam(Wai Nam).

The one-way journey to the first beach will take about 2.5 hours. This walk is not easy; you will need a little stamina. However, any person with average physical shape can handle it. Alternatively, you can reach these beaches by motorboat from Haad Rin in just 10 minutes, but you will have to pay money and it will be less interesting.

It is picturesque, cozy and practically no people. I advise you to relax, sunbathe, swim, and then I suggest you visit 2 popular bars - Guys Bar(Guy's Bar) and Eden Garden(Eden Garden). I recommend checking out the party schedule in these bars in advance; they are usually held on Fridays and Saturdays. The highlight is that often night parties flow into morning ones and you can see people dancing even at 11 am. The music here is usually house music. You can hang out here for the night and return to Haad Rin in the morning. If you don’t want to dance, I advise you to just enjoy the atmosphere of the place. Eden Garden has excellent cuisine, and the interior itself is conducive to bliss and relaxation. In the evening you can return back to Haad Rin (on foot through the jungle or by boat).

If you have the strength, you can continue along the jungle path to one of the most isolated and inaccessible beaches of Koh Phangan Thailand - the eastern Haad Yao beach(Haad Yao east). This trail is marked on the maps, but in reality we did not check this section of the path.

Somewhere in the jungle on the way to Haad Yuan Beach

DAY 4: Haad Rin viewpoints

(overnight on Haad Rin)

In the morning, I suggest you soak up Lila Beach and then go to the most extreme viewing platform Haad Rina - an old antenna tower, an adrenaline rush is guaranteed. The tower offers panoramic views of the entire southern part of Koh Phangan and 3 beaches of the Haad Rin area are immediately visible.

After the tower we go to Sea Breeze Resort. On the top floor of this hotel there is a large open-air terrace that offers stunning panoramic views of Koh Phangan. Also, from the hotel you can walk to a Buddhist temple.

In the afternoon you can go to the area neighboring Haad Rin - Ban Kai(Baan Kai). It is in this area in the depths of the jungle that parties famous throughout the island are held "Waterfall Party"(check party dates in advance). There is also a fashionable party place - a beach club. Infinity Beach Club.

There are a lot of parties held in the Ban Kai area and its neighboring Baan Tai - Black Moon Party, Half Moon Party, Shiva Moon. Of course, they are not as large as the famous full moon party, but if you like parties, this is it. The music there is usually in the style of techno, house, trance. But Ban Tai Phangan beach is not very good.

There is still a lot to do in the area around Ban Tai and Ban Kai, but you will definitely need transport, so I suggest leaving that for the second half of your holiday.

View from the old antenna tower

DAY 5: exploring the southeast of the island

(overnight on Haad Than Sadet)

On Tan Sadet beach I advise you to go for privacy and atmosphere. Stay at Mai Pen Rai Bungalows and feel like Robinson. Here you can also observe the life of monitor lizards that live in the local backwater. On this day you can go explore the waterfalls in the surrounding area. It is within walking distance (consists of 3 small waterfalls in which you can swim: Deang Waterfall, Saampan Watefall and Thong Nang Waterfall). You can also take a walk to the neighboring Haad Tong Reng Beach.

Cliff houses on Tan Sadet beach

DAY 6: relax on Tan Sadet beach

(overnight on Tan Sadet)

If you don’t want to bask on the beach, you can rent a boat or a jeep and go explore the hard-to-reach secluded beaches of the eastern part of the island - Haad Nam Tok(Haad Nam Tok) Haad Young(Haad Yang) and Haad Yao East(Haad Yao East). It is here, and specifically on the Haad Yao East beach (not to be confused with the Haad Yao beach in the West), that a cool party “for our own” is held once a month Lost Paradise Party. Since it is very difficult to get here, there are no random people here. And not far from Haad Nam Tok beach there is Thang Praphat waterfall(aka Lost Paradise waterfall), you can reach it along a mountain path. Or you can stay in Tan Sadet and go to one of the local cafes with panoramic views of the beach.

Cafe in Tan Sadet with panoramic views of the beach

DAY 7: relax on Thong Nai Pan Noi beach

(overnight at Thong Nai Pan Noi)

Whatever one may say, this is where, in my opinion, the best beach of Koh Phangan is located - Thong Nai Pan Noi beach(Thong Nai Pan Noi). From here you don’t want to leave anywhere, but you want to spend hours enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of this place. Reviews about Thong Nai Nai Phangan beach are extremely positive. If you are looking for the best beaches on Koh Phangan for swimming, then Thong Nai Pan Noi is ideal.

Holidays here are considered more expensive than average, there are many luxury hotels, but you can find a way out, I recommend staying in the cozy Thongtapan Resort bungalow complex (Tongtapan Resort) – reasonable price tag and excellent quality.

I also advise you to walk to the neighboring Thong Nai Beach Pan Yai(Thong Nai Pan Yai). The beach here is worse, but the infrastructure is better; you can run to the local small food court and try pad thai or grilled fish. And if you have the strength and desire, then you can continue the path and reach bar "2C Bar". From there you have the best panorama of the northeast of Koh Phangan.

View from the bar area 2С bar

DAY 8: Trekking to Bottle Beach

(overnight at Thong Pan Noi)

Bottle Beach or in other words, Haad Khuat is a very popular place; the beach is loved for its picturesqueness and inaccessibility. Of course, you can get to Bottle Beach by boat, but it's more extreme to walk through the jungle. The road is not easy, so be patient. Along the way there will be an observation deck with beautiful views. I suggest taking a boat back to Thong Nai Pan Noi.

Boat taxi on Koh Phangan

DAY 9: to Than Prawet Waterfall

(overnight at Thong Pan Noi)

View of the Ang Thong archipelago from the observation deck

DAY 11: continue exploring Ang Thong Park

(overnight in Chaloklam)

Early in the morning on the island of Wua Talap you can see a rare species of monkeys. You may have time to take a couple of beautiful photos. With the advent of people, monkeys hide in trees and in the forest.

In the first half of the day, while tourist groups have not yet poured onto the island, I advise you to climb the 500-meter observation deck of Wua Talap island. From here you can see a stunning panorama of Ang Thong, and the best thing is that you can enjoy it without the fuss and crowds of tourists. Then, I advise you to rent a kayak and ride around the islands (there are several routes of different lengths)

In the afternoon we leave back to Koh Phangan Thailand and move to the north of Koh Phangan - to Chaloklam town, which will become our permanent base for the entire next week. There is a wide choice of accommodation here. If you are traveling with a large group, it is more profitable to rent a house on Koh Phangan or think about renting a villa on Koh Phangan.

From this day on, a rather active part of the trip will begin, we will travel a lot, visit various places and attractions of the island of Koh Phangan, so we will need transport on Koh Phangan, in this case, renting a car on Koh Phangan is an excellent option. You can rent a car online or.

View of Chaloklam Bay

DAY 12: north of Koh Phangan + waterfalls + safari + observation deck + sauna

(overnight in Chaloklam)

On this day, I advise you to explore several beaches in the north of Koh Phangan. Chaloklam Beach on Koh Phangan is unremarkable and can be missed. I advise you to go straight to the picturesque Malibu Beach. There is snow-white sand and beautiful photogenic trees. If you don’t know what to do on Koh Phangan, try your hand at wakeboarding (it’s just a couple of minutes walk from Malibu beach to the wakeboarding center). After Malibu beach we go to (Paradise Waterfall). Here you can bungee jump into the water.

Then we move to the next beach - Haad Mae Haad. The beach is interesting because of the presence of a coral reef, where you can snorkel, as well as the small island of Koh Ma, which can be reached by water on foot during low tides. After the beach we go to (Wang Sai Waterfall)- This is one of the most popular waterfalls in Koh Phangan. There is a nearby safari park (Phangan Safari)(elephant rides through the jungle, crocodiles and snakes shows, monkeys).

In the afternoon we go to a bar with an interesting name "" . It is located high on the mountain and from here the best panorama opens to the north of Koh Phangan. Also, all sorts of parties are often held here. I advise you to spend the evening in a very cool place - . A place with incredible energy, total relaxation and nirvana are guaranteed.

Popular Malibu beach

DAY 13: trekking to Mount Khao Ra + waterfalls + entertainment + beautiful sunset

(overnight in Chaloklam)

To climb up Mount Khao Ra I advise you to leave early, while it’s not too hot. Mount Khao Ra is only 627 meters high, but the path to it is not an easy walk. You will have to follow goat paths, literally making your way through the jungle, but as a reward you will be rewarded with gorgeous views from above.

Afterwards I advise you to visit the waterfalls in Tan Sadet National Park- This is primarily a waterfall. There are several natural plunge pools where you can take a dip. Nearby you can visit two more attractions on Koh Phangan: "Slip n fly"(water slides for extreme sports enthusiasts, swimming pools, a bar-restaurant and good music) and "Sompon Park Elephant Trekking"(jungle elephant safari).

On top of Khao Ra

I advise you to spend the evening in a very romantic place - a cafe . The cafe is located high on the mountain, and the way there, even by car, is not the easiest. Come here to watch the sunset. There are beautiful views, delicious cuisine and very few people.

DAY 14: west of Koh Phangan + atmospheric cafes + beautiful sunsets

(overnight in Chaloklam)

On this day, I propose to go to the west of Phangan to explore the western beaches - Salad Phangan beach ( Haad Salad), western Haad Yao ( Haad Yao), Srithanu Phangan Beach ( Sri Tha Nu), Nai Wok ( Ao Nai Wok) and others. Many yoga and retreat centers are concentrated here. There is also a nudist beach on Koh Phangan.

This is a great area to visit Koh Phangan's best restaurants and check out Koh Phangan's markets. For lunch, I advise you to stop by a very atmospheric bar on Koh Phangan — Sabai Bar, everything here is in the style of Bob Marley, reasonable prices, original interior. I also recommend (Koh Raham)– very beautiful surroundings, but the price tag is above average.

We go to watch the sunset at one of the Phangan restaurants in the western part of the island. On this day I suggest you stop by (Bluerama). The place is quite pompous, the price tag is appropriate. Among the highlights is a beautiful swimming pool with panoramic views of the setting sun and pleasant music from a DJ. Along the way you will pass a very beautiful location for a photo - a horizontal sloping palm tree in the area of Ao Wok Tum beach. Since you won’t get enough to eat in Blueram, I suggest heading to the Pantip food court in Thongsalu afterwards.

Unusual interior in Sabai bar

DAY 15: Haad Khom beach and pig lunch + Koh Phangan temples + herbal sauna + beautiful sunset

(overnight in Chaloklam)

I suggest spending the first half of the day on Haad Khom beach (or otherwise Coconut Beach). This beach is one of my top three favorite beaches on the island. Picturesque palm trees, good depth, white sand and practically no people. I recommend having a snack here Coral Bay Bar. The specialty of the establishment is a huge pig that lives right on the territory of the bar.

If you wish, you can take a boat from Haad Khom Beach to Bottle Beach (if you have not visited it before). Also not far from Haad Khom the hiking trail to Bottle Beach begins.

Then you can go towards Thong Sala and see several temples: Chinese Temple ( Chinese Temple), Wat Phu Khao Noi ( Wat Phu Khao Noi), Wat Khao Tham ( Wat Khao Tham) and Wat Pho temple ( Wat Pho). Opposite Wat Pho is herbal sauna I definitely recommend checking it out. But I advise you to come to the Wat Khao Tham temple in the late afternoon, there is an observation deck from which you can watch a beautiful sunset.

I advise you to have a snack again at the food court in Tong Sala, and for a beautiful sunset we go again to the west of the island, for example, to (Amstardam Bar). The atmosphere of the establishment is Rastafarian, the contingent is appropriate.

Stunning sunset at Amsterdam Bar

DAY 16: beach holiday + amusement park + beautiful sunset + reggae party

(overnight in Chaloklam)

I suggest spending the first half of the day on the beach, choose any one to suit your taste. On this day you can go to the Baan Tai area and visit the amusement park Jungle Flight Adventure Park. There you can ride a zipline or ride through the jungle on ATVs.

I advise you to go and watch the sunset again in one of the bars in the western part of the island. I suggest you stop by (Top Rock Bar). There is a cozy, calm atmosphere here. Not far from Thong Sala on Nai Wok beach there is a pathetic place - the Kupu Kupu Phangan Beach Villas & Spa hotel. There is a restaurant and a panoramic pool overlooking the sea and the sunset.

The evening and night can be continued in one of the island's reggae bars. I advise you to go to a reggae bar Rasta Home (Rasta Home) in the west of Koh Phangan, Thailand. Live music, a lot of Rastafarians, dancing, prohibited substances.

On Haad Khom beach

Day 17: leaving the island

You can spend the first half of the day on the beach. Then we return to the house (hotel), collect our things, return the rented car and move towards Thong Sala to wait for the ferry to depart. Don’t forget to insure yourself before traveling; personally, I always get insurance from the service, they have excellent prices.

By the way, they can be seen from the island during low tide. They perfectly protect Phangan from the raging monsoons.

Phangan has changed quite imperceptibly over the course of a quarter of a century, from the very moment when the very first places for tourists to stay appeared on the island. Many local residents decided to change their activities, choosing serving tourists as their main occupation. For some 20-25 years, while tourism was developing on this island of Thailand, life has changed little, but over the past few years, literally 5-7, changes have become very clearly visible.

The oldest structure on the island is the Nai Temple, built in the village of Baan Nua, located in the south of the island. Historians suggest that this stupa was created four hundred years before Ayutthaya, in another period - Srivichaya.

Buddhism is the main religion of the inhabitants of the island, as well as for the whole of Thailand. On Phangan, you can also see Christian churches, and even places for Muslim prayers.

Phangan was considered the most beloved island of Rama V, the king who was most revered there. His portraits can be easily found almost everywhere on the island, and on the rocks you can see 9 autographs of the kings and rulers of Thailand.
