Proportions of an ideal nose: parameters for rhinoplasty, nose surgery. Ideal nose shape What an ideal face looks like according to Stefan Markworth's theory

Correction of the shape of the nose is one of the most popular plastic surgeries. Experts explain this by the fact that the nose is the most noticeable part of the face, attracting the attention of others, and therefore imperfections in its shape can significantly worsen a person’s self-esteem and even affect the quality of his life.

Evgeniy Georgievich Donets, a plastic surgeon at the Medical Club clinic, a full member of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery ISAPS, told readers of the site about how to correct the shape of the nose and what a patient who has decided to undergo rhinoplasty needs to know.

How do patients usually explain the reasons why they want to change the shape of their nose?

The fact is that the nose is a special organ: it is always in sight, nothing can hide it. Sometimes patients say that all their lives they had complexes about their appearance because they did not like the shape of their nose. One famous surgeon said this about this: the nose occupies a central place on the face and should not be conspicuous. The attention of others should be attracted, for example, by beautiful eyes, but not by the nose, which should simply be neat.

Usually patients come with specific complaints: someone wants to get rid of a hump, someone doesn’t like the tip of their nose, someone is not satisfied with the length of their nose, someone has a problem with the asymmetry of the shape of the nose after an injury. The complaints are different, and we try to listen to the patient, understand what does not suit him, and make sure that the nose looks unoperated and at the same time quite attractive.

Who seeks rhinoplasty more often - men or women?

Of course, girls - they are more interested in appearance, beauty of form. Men often come in with post-traumatic deformities when there are obvious curvatures and they just want to put their nose in a straight position.

In your opinion, is rhinoplasty a complex operation?

Yes, I believe that rhinoplasty is a very complex and creative operation. If the average person judges the nose from the standpoint of whether it is beautiful or ugly, then for the surgeon it is, first of all, a rather complex osteochondral structure, which very easily changes to the right - to the left when any positions inside are shifted. Therefore, it is very important to understand this entire anatomy and carefully assemble the osteochondral frame on which this or that shape of the nose will be formed. From the point of view of volume, effort and time spent, this would seem to be a small operation with minor trauma, but technically it is a very complex operation.

In what cases is particularly high skill required? Which deformities are difficult to correct?

Patients come with different requests. Someone wants to change only the tip - this is one volume of surgery, someone needs to change the tip and back of the nose - this is a different volume. And it happens that you need to change the tip, the back, narrow the base of the bone pyramid, adjust the functional part so that the nose can breathe - this is a completely different scope of the operation. When a doctor deals with such volumetric corrections, the more structures affected, the higher the likelihood of some errors. Therefore, when an operation is performed on the so-called “full nose”, when both the aesthetic part and the functional part are corrected, there must be clear calculations: how not to lose aesthetics by improving the functional part, and vice versa.

Are there any contraindications for rhinoplasty or age restrictions?

There may be relative contraindications for rhinoplasty, but they mostly concern the surgeon: if you see that you cannot make this nose more beautiful, then sometimes you have to refuse.

There are no age restrictions. If an elderly woman decides to have her nose operated on because she has been working toward this all her life, then we will do it.

What are the medical indications for rhinoplasty?

Only a functional nose can be a medical indication. I repeat once again that an aesthetically imperfect shape of the nose cannot become some kind of prerequisite for surgical intervention. If breathing is only impaired, for example, after an injury, then the nose must be operated on, because this affects the quality of life.

What are the features of the rehabilitation period? What should a patient be prepared for after rhinoplasty to avoid complications?

The patient must understand that after rhinoplasty surgery he will have to stay in the hospital for an average of one day, that is, until the morning. If this was a minimal amount of intervention in the form of correction of the tip of the nose, then it is possible to leave the clinic on the same day in the evening. The patient must understand that he will wear a special fixing bandage for exactly a week. With a bandage on your nose, you can safely go about your daily activities. There is no need to be ashamed of her - after all, it was a beautiful image operation. After removing the bandage, he will see himself in the mirror as very attractive. And no other rehabilitation is required.

What result of rhinoplasty would you consider successful?

The main criterion for success is a happy patient with glowing eyes, who, when meeting the surgeon who operated on her, says - thank you! These are hundreds of our patients whom we then meet and see how their lives change for the better, because they feel much more confident. When our patients look at photographs of their faces before and after rhinoplasty, they are surprised at the difference and wonder how they could live for so long with such an unsightly nose. This is an indicator that the patient got what she wanted.

Another indicator of successful rhinoplasty is when the nose does not look operated on, and no one believes the patient that there was a surgeon’s intervention. If others do not notice that the patient has undergone rhinoplasty, this is an indicator of a job well done.

What advice would you give to patients who would like to correct the shape of their nose, but have some doubts about the success of the operation?

You should at least come for a consultation with a surgeon. Consultation is most often free. I recommend visiting at least three surgeons and finding out all the questions you are interested in, because even if the patient does not need to be operated on, unfortunately, there will definitely be a surgeon who wants to do it.

But before going to a surgeon for a consultation, the patient needs to conduct an analysis: look at himself and clearly understand what he wants to change. Sometimes patients come to the Medical Club clinic with a request - doctor, give me a beautiful nose. The concept of a beautiful nose is relative: for some, a nose with a hump will be beautiful, for others - a long one, for others - a small doll-like one. The nose is a complex structure, so it is very important for the surgeon to have a clearly defined task: say, I am not satisfied with the tip of my nose, I want to make it narrower or wider. Or I’m not satisfied with the bridge of the nose, the hump - I want to remove the hump, I want to make the bridge of the nose smooth, soft, or something else. I am not satisfied with the base of the bone pyramid - I want to narrow it or widen it. Nose length - I want to increase it, or shorten it, or raise the tip of the nose. And then from all these requirements you can form a vision of what kind of nose the patient wants to get.

What does a doctor do if the patient’s wishes regarding the correction of his nose lead to disharmony of the entire face?

If the patient is trying to achieve results that are impossible to achieve, or they will spoil his appearance, then we must tell him what can be achieved and what needs to be done for this. If it is difficult for the patient to understand the surgeon’s explanations, there is so-called 3D modeling, which allows you to take a photo and create a 3D model with a modified nose in any projection. At the Medical Club clinic, it is possible to create a 3D model of a patient from a photograph, and with this modeled nose you can do miracles - change whatever the patient wants. But again, all this changes with the participation of a surgeon who will be able to stop his fantasies in time in terms of surgical feasibility. For example, if he wants to get an extra-lowered projection, then I have to explain to him that we can change the osteochondral skeleton, but the skin cover will not shrink.

Why do you, as a specialist, as a surgeon, like rhinoplasty?

Because this is a creative operation. This is really an operation where you don’t always do standard things, and your work is all in plain sight, you can’t hide it. And then, in the end, you get a satisfied patient who is happy to have a beautiful nose shape.

Examples of rhinoplasty from Dr. Donts Evgeniy. Medical Club Clinic

The nose may seem like a relatively small part of the body, but it is what creates the unique appearance of a person.

But not all people love their nose, so plastic surgery to correct this part of the face is incredibly popular, and is even considered the most popular procedure!

So, what is the ideal nose shape? Of course, before answering this question, it is worth emphasizing that each nationality has its own physiological characteristics and ideals.

A nose with the following configurations is considered ideal and correct: straight back, rounded tip (slightly upturned), streamlined shape along its entire length. And most importantly, it should be in harmony with the rest of the face. But the angle between the columella and the protruding point of the tip should be 45 degrees. The angle between the columella and the upper lip should be approximately 105 degrees for women, and 95 degrees for men. The nostrils should be symmetrical, and the wings should have smooth outlines.

You can give an example from real life: for example, actress Jessica Biel has a very beautiful shape (according to recognized standards).

Is it possible to determine a person’s character by this part of the face? In this matter, physiognomy comes to the rescue, being able to characterize the personality and character of a person based on external data.

Although not every person will agree with the description of his character, the science of physiognomy is still very interesting:

  • the owner of a long nose is distinguished by tact, sensitivity, and balance;
  • short speaks of impulsiveness, openness, flexibility of character, optimism;
  • narrow indicates high efficiency and responsibility;
  • a person with a wide nose has loyalty and devotion, good nature, and the ability to make responsible and important decisions;
  • the Greek nose speaks of a person’s integrity and independence, his leadership qualities, and pride; hawk - demanding, erudition, analytical mind; snub-nosed - cheerfulness, sociability, kindness, generosity; potato form - hot temper, phlegmatic, directness.

Changing the shape of the nose is possible with the help of plastic surgery - rhinoplasty. People who are chronically dissatisfied with their natural shape resort to surgery to correct some individual elements (for example, eliminating a hump, raising the tip, correcting the nasal septum, etc.), or to correct the consequences of injuries.

Rhinoplasty can eliminate a hump, restore proportions, eliminate the consequences of a congenital defect or injury, correct the tip and wings of the nose, etc. That is, the operation can qualitatively correct this part of the face for aesthetic and functional purposes.

How much does nose shape correction cost in Moscow? Prices vary greatly in different clinics, but on average they are:

Before rhinoplasty, a person consults with a specialist to choose the ideal shape specifically for himself. After all, the whole secret is in the proportions, for example, if a woman wants a shape like her favorite actress, this does not mean that it will make her more beautiful, perhaps even the effect will be the opposite of what was expected.

But thanks to modern technologies, 3D facial modeling is performed, which allows the patient to look at a photo of his future appearance and understand whether he likes the new appearance.

By the way, now there are even online consultations that allow you to find out everything you need without leaving your home.

What to do if rhinoplasty is not possible, but you want to become more attractive? You can change the shape of your nose without surgery using visual correction.

Depending on the desired result, you will have to do certain makeup. To do this, you will need light and dark powder (or foundation). The rule is very simple: if you need to visually reduce an area, apply dark powder to it, and if the area needs to be highlighted and made more convex and voluminous, use light powder. For example, to reduce a long nose, you need to apply dark powder to the base and light powder to the wings.

It has long been known that the nose is not just a part of the face that is involved in a person’s breathing and sense of smell, it is also his aesthetic center. Snub-nosed, neatly upturned, “potato-shaped”, noble “Greek” or with a hump - these are only a small part of the names for it. We have selected for you the most common methods for calculating the ideal parameters of the nose and face as a whole.

Leonardo da Vinci's theory of the "golden ratio"

At different times and eras, the “fashion” for noses changed, but the Italian artist, Leonardo da Vinci, created a universal principle of harmony called the “golden ratio.” The essence of this principle, in our case in relation to the nose, lies in the harmony of this organ with the rest of the elements of the face. The rules of the “golden ratio” are actively used in architecture, fine arts and medicine.

Ideal length

The length of the nose, according to the principle of the “golden ratio”, is equal to 1/3 of the entire face. In order to find out the length of your nose, you need to measure your face: from the hairline to the eyebrows, from the eyebrows to the end of the nose and from the end of the nose to the chin. If the frontal, facial and lower parts of the face are the same size, congratulations, you are the owner of a nose with the “ideal” length.

Attractive width

The optimal width of the nose in the area of the wings should be equal to the longitudinal section of the eyes. And its boundaries should not extend beyond the lines drawn through the inner corners of the eyes. If all these parameters match, then you are in luck! Your width is correct, according to Leonardo da Vinci's theory.

Correct tilt of the nose relative to the forehead

The angle between the line of the forehead (the place where the forehead meets the nose) and the back of the nose should be no more than 40 and no less than 30 degrees. Ideally, of course, 35 degrees.

Proportional tilt relative to the mouth

The angle between the columella (septum of the nasal vestibule) and the upper lip for the fair half of humanity should be 105 degrees, and for the stronger half - 95 degrees. But, with age, this figure gradually decreases.

The shape of a person’s nose largely depends on race, so this method of analyzing proportions is applicable mainly to “European” noses.

Stephen Marquardt's "mask" theory

Modern plastic surgeons did not stop only at the conclusions of Leonardo da Vinci and his followers about calculating ideal parameters, but began to study the proportions of an attractive face and its elements more deeply.

Thus, the American plastic surgeon Stephen Marquardt, who has been dealing with the problems of facial plastic surgery for many years, over the many years of his practice tried to derive the universal proportions of an ideally beautiful face. He analyzed and decided to combine all previous scientific theories about the rule of the “golden ratio” and derived a formula for ideal facial parameters.

Proportions of the nose according to Marquardt

According to his theory, the nose is a triangle in profile and full face; in an ideal face, the sides of this triangle are 1.618 times longer than its base. When you smile, the triangle transforms into a pentagon and it is then that the face has the most pleasing features to the eye.

Parameters of an ideal face according to Marquardt

But Steven Marquardt did not stop there and combined all the triangles and pentagons, taking into account all the relationships with the number 1.618, and created a “beauty mask”, which can be used to calculate the attractiveness of facial features.

There are four types of masks:

  • Full face.
  • Full face with a smile.
  • Face profile.
  • Profile with a smile.

The better the mask fits a person, the more beautiful his facial features are. The mask developed by Marquardt is suitable for everyone, regardless of gender or race.

Thus, to obtain the desired result, namely to obtain a completely attractive face, the ideal parameters of not only the nose, but also the face as a whole are important.

For all its seemingly insignificant size, the nose is the part of the body that makes a significant contribution to the appearance of every person. On the face, it is certainly the most striking feature of the appearance. But, according to physiognomists, in addition to its contribution to appearance, any nose can also tell a lot about the character of its owner.

Structure and types of nose

Before plunging into an analysis of ideals and what this part of a woman’s face can say to adherents of physiognomy, you must first understand exactly what parts it itself consists of. They also form the general shape of the nose and, as a result, the picture of the face of its owner.

Components of the nose:

The nose is characterized by its shape, width, length and the above components, such as the tip, bridge of the nose, and so on. All these signs in their combinations are traced every day in our lives and have ethnic and geographical characteristics that lie in the particularities of their structure. Types of the nose along its back:

  • Straight (characterized by the fact that the bridge of the nose and the tip lie on the same straight line).
  • Concave (this type is characterized by a depression from the bridge of the nose to the tip).
  • Convex (it is characterized by a protrusion between the tip and the bridge of the nose).
  • Wavy (this type is characterized by all sorts of irregularities from the base to the very tip, not always uniform, but smooth).

Ideal shape and size

It is worth considering the criteria for the ideal of this part of the body from the position of physiognomy, because it is the specialists of this science who believe: the location of the nose at the epicenter of three zones is a direct indication that it is a fulcrum by which one can assess the balance of the face as a whole.

And this one this attribute is of great importance when reading faces by specialists. At all times and among different peoples, ideals were different: for example, the Greeks had one, the Chinese had another. One of the oldest monuments of beauty is the sculpture of Aphrodite. The statue is the personification of female beauty in general and Greek ideas about the beauty of the nose in particular: smooth, high, with an almost completely absent bridge of the nose.

However, in our times, ideas about the beauty of noses have undergone significant changes. An ideal spout in the modern sense almost impossible without a rounded tip that is not excessively upturned, which slightly closes the openings of the nostrils. At the same time, a slight elevation of the tip of the nose is considered to be a feminine feature. And, naturally, an ideal nose simply cannot tilt either to the right or to the left.

In addition, the ideal nose is in perfect harmony with the rest of the face - with every feature and fold, which makes the overall picture complete. In other words, there is no such thing as scattered beauty, for just as at all times only holistic beauty was sung, so in the modern world no one will sing the praises of only one component part of the face.

Physiognomists also emphasize that a perfect nose is characterized by rooting at its base, that is, it is typical of a small area between the eyes and eyebrows.

Required attributes of the ideal:

  • straight back;
  • rounded and slightly upturned tip;
  • shape, streamlined along its entire length;
  • an angle of 45 degrees between the skin part of the septum between the nostrils and the protruding point of the tip of the nose;
  • an angle of 95 degrees between the septum between the nostrils and the upper lip;
  • symmetrical nostrils and nostril wings with smooth outlines;
  • harmony with the rest of the face.

Visual examples of an ideal nose

However, it is important to keep in mind: The ideal shape of this face detail does not suit everyone. No matter how strange it may sound, it is true. Keep in mind that beauty does not depend on each line or part of the face individually, but on their harmonious combination.

In addition, a woman’s anthropometric data, such as her height, which is far from the face, also plays an important role. A snub nose looks great on short women, while having one on a tall girl will make her nostrils overly conspicuous, which can hardly add to her attractiveness. On large faces it should be correspondingly large, and on small faces, respectively, vice versa.

Determining character by the shape of the nose

According to physiognomy, depending on the shape of a person’s nose, you can not only feel sympathy or antipathy for him, but also learn about his character. It is difficult to judge the reliability of such studies based on parts of the face, but it may be worth familiarizing yourself with the main features that characterize a person based on his nose, and then analyze the reliability based on your own experience. Take a closer look and evaluate your character, as well as those of your loved ones and acquaintances, using the forms presented below.

Classic shape

This shape is easily recognized by its evenness, and a straight line can be drawn from its bridge to its tip.

Holding back emotions from others is common for a woman with such a part of her face. It is this trait of theirs that leads to the fact that they are able to give the impression of strict egoists with a cold disposition. As a rule, these are people of a hardworking character, with whom they always know what they need in life and go towards their goals. Despite the selfish nature of straight-nosed girls in the eyes of others, they usually strive not only to achieve what they want themselves, but also to help their loved ones. It is difficult for such ladies to be confused by life's problems, crises and circumstances. They always try to take care of themselves and take care of themselves no matter what.

Upturned tip

Snub-nosed type, as a rule, straight, with features in the form of an upturned tip and often several widened nostrils

The upturned tip of the nose is characteristic of girls who look at life with sparkling optimism. They are characterized by kindness, a sympathetic and compassionate disposition. Distinctive character traits of those with snub noses are their imagination and energy, which sometimes prompts them to go on all sorts of adventures. In love they are carefree, as, indeed, in many other aspects of life, and often give themselves to it wholeheartedly. Cheerfulness and easy disposition can attract people to them, in particular men, but constancy is not a distinctive feature of snub-nosed girls. Taking on any responsibility is a burden for them, and therefore they constantly need the support of friends, family and loved ones.

Roman nose

Straight and large, with a slight hump, which is clearly visible in profile and which smoothly aligns to both edges of the nose.

Owners of the Roman type are distinguished by a strong, to some extent masculine character. They are characterized by an analytical mindset and some aristocracy, ambition and leadership qualities. Impulsiveness and sensitivity to circumstances are alien to them. Owners of a Roman nose get used to calculating their actions in advance, anticipating the consequences and being several steps ahead when it comes to competition. Their resilience and ambition soften the blows of fate both in their careers and in their personal lives, encouraging them to look forward without fear.

In the form of potatoes

A characteristic external feature is a significant difference between the wings of its owner’s nose and the width of the bridge of her nose. Its back can have different lengths, as well as the tip of the nose.

For all the apparent simplicity of girls with potato noses, as well as the superficial impression of the everyday mind of these girls that they make on many, all these hasty conclusions are, as a rule, deceptive and fail upon closer examination of the owners of potato noses and communication with them. Many people can envy the discretion of girls with this nose shape, since they often turn out to be smarter than many other people.

In pursuing their goals, they are distinguished by uncompromisingness, sometimes bordering on tyranny. They rarely think about both other people’s and even their own feelings, which cannot but have a negative impact on relationships with others, which often end dramatically. With all this, girls with potato noses are very sociable, have a positive attitude and have an excellent sense of humor.

Eagle nose shape

Many girls are not happy with eagle shape, which is characterized by a straight nose with a slightly curved tip hanging over the lips, but this shape can make a woman’s face memorable. Often there is a hump on the nose of this shape.

What definitely cannot be taken away from women with an eagle shape is self-sufficiency, which does not even allow them to get bored alone. They know how to enjoy life, but rarely go to extremes. Owners of an aquiline nose are not subject to the pressure of public opinion, since the opinions of strangers about their lifestyle do not bother them. They know how to live the way they like, without having to prove to anyone that they are right and enjoying life and themselves. They avoid arguments, which, given their slightly arrogant disposition, is quite natural.

Ways to get the perfect shape

There is no clear answer to this question. So, specialists in the field of surgery will have one answer to this, and make-up artists, given that the nose can be changed purely visually and without surgery, will have another. In addition, the general context of the face against which the shape of the nose changes is of great importance, and correction of certain parts of the nose can be beneficial for some, while the appearance of others can only make things worse.

Rhinoplasty procedure

Rhinoplasty is the name given to surgical manipulation of the nose to give it the desired shape.. This is one of the most difficult cosmetic operations, since the favorable outcome often has some degree of variability.

The operation is directed to those areas of a given part of the face with which the girl is dissatisfied, for example, the wings and tip may be subject to correction, and the operation may also be aimed at removing a hump or eliminating the consequences of injuries. Also, many resort to nose correction surgery to correct defects obtained from a previous operation, that is, they go for rhinoplasty again to correct mistakes from the previous one.

It is important to take the step of nose correction through surgery very seriously., since the consequences do not always live up to expectations. Often surgery is needed to achieve not so much aesthetic as functional goals, for example, such as correcting birth defects. In this matter, it is very important to consult with a reputable specialist, and not only in order to choose the ideal nose shape for yourself. It is important to minimize the risk of possible errors (including on the part of the surgeon).

Visual correction with cosmetics

It doesn’t always make sense to lie down on the operating table when you can correct the outline of your nose while standing in front of a mirror, even if it is only a temporary visual effect. To do this you need to do special makeup, but there is nothing complicated about it.

To visually reduce any area, you need to apply dark powder to it. If the goal is to highlight a particular area, making it more voluminous, then light powder is applied to it. Example: if you want to shorten a long sock, apply dark powder to the base and light powder to the wings.

But the matter is not limited to just cosmetics. You should also select appropriate hairstyles and other image details. For example, voluminous hairstyles can visually reduce this part of the face if it is too large, but you should not make eyebrows too thin - this will shift the emphasis precisely to the most voluminous parts of the face. Women with a hump on a large nose are not recommended to wear bangs.

Try it, experiment with the image of your appearance, and you will definitely come to an understanding of which nose is ideal for you, as well as how exactly to emphasize all its charms and hide its flaws.
