The products should not be used for longer than 7-10 days in a row, as addiction may develop. Features of the use of eye drops for certain diseases and conditions.

Correct Application

In most cases, eye drops cannot be used while wearing soft contact lenses, since the active component of the drug can accumulate on the mucous membrane, resulting in an overdose. During the period of using eye drops, it is necessary to abandon soft lenses and replace them with glasses. If it is impossible to refuse soft contact lenses, then they should be put on at least 20 - 30 minutes after introducing drops into the eyes.

If it is necessary to use two or more types of eye drops at the same time, then it is necessary to maintain an interval between their administration of at least 15 minutes, and optimally half an hour. That is, first one drop is instilled, then after 15 - 30 minutes the second, after another 15 - 30 minutes the third, etc.

The frequency and duration of use of eye drops depends on their type, the pharmacological properties of the active substance and the specific disease or symptom relief they are used to treat. For acute infections, eye drops are administered 8-12 times a day, for chronic non-inflammatory diseases - 2-3 times a day.

Any eye drops must be stored in a dark place at room temperature not exceeding 30oC so that they retain their therapeutic effect. After opening the solution package, it must be used within one month. If eye drops have not been used in one month, then this open bottle should be thrown away and a new one should be started.

Eye drops must be used strictly following the following rules:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before using eye drops;
  • Open the bottle;
  • Pipette the solution if the bottle is not equipped with a dropper;
  • Tilt your head back so that your eyes look at the ceiling;
  • Using your index finger, pull the lower eyelid downward until the conjunctival sac becomes visible;
  • Without touching the tip of the pipette or dropper of the bottle to the surface of the eye and eyelashes, release a drop of solution directly into the conjunctival sac formed by retracting the lower eyelid;
  • Try to keep your eye open for 30 seconds;
  • If it is impossible to keep your eye open, then gently blink it, trying to prevent the medicinal solution from leaking out;
  • To improve the penetration of drops into the mucous membrane, you need to press your finger on the outer corner of the eye;
  • Close the bottle.

If, while instilling one eye, the tip of the pipette or dropper of the bottle accidentally touches the eyelashes or the surface of the conjunctiva, then these instruments should no longer be used. That is, to instill in the second eye you will have to take a new pipette or open another bottle of medicine.

Features of application

Let's consider the features and main areas of application of eye drops, which are most often used in the practice of an ophthalmologist.

Eye drops for fatigue

To eliminate the symptoms of eye fatigue (redness, itching, swelling, discomfort in the eyes, a feeling of “sand”, etc.), you can use artificial tears (Vidisik, Oftagel, Hilo Komod, Oxial, Systane) or vasoconstrictors based on tetrizoline (Vizin, Octilia, VizOptic, Visomitin). At the same time, doctors recommend first using vasoconstrictors for 1 - 2 days, instilling them 3 - 4 times a day until the painful symptoms disappear. And then, for 1 - 1.5 months, use any artificial tear preparation, instilling it into the eyes 3 - 4 times a day.

In addition, to relieve eye fatigue, you can use Taufon drops, which contain a complex of nutrients, vitamins and minerals that improve metabolic processes. Taufon drops can be used for a long time - from 1 to 3 months continuously.

The most effective drops for relieving eye fatigue are artificial tear preparations, followed by Taufon, and finally vasoconstrictors. Taufon and artificial tear preparations are used approximately equally, and vasoconstrictor drops can only be used as emergency aid.

Allergy eye drops

For long-term treatment of allergic reactions and eye diseases (for example, conjunctivitis), two main types of eye drops are used:

  1. Preparations with membrane stabilizers (Cromohexal, Ifiral, Krom-allerg, Kromoglin, Kuzikrom, Lecrolin, Stadaglycin, High-Krom, Allergo-Komod, Vividrin, Lodoxamide, Alomide);
  2. Antihistamines (Antazolin, Allergophthal, Oftophenazole, Spersallerg, Azelastine, Allergodil, Levocabastine, Histimet, Visin Alergy, Reactin, Pheniramine, Opcon A and Opatonol).

Drugs from the group of membrane stabilizers have the most pronounced therapeutic effect, so they are used to treat severe allergic reactions or eye diseases, as well as when antihistamines are ineffective. In principle, for a course of treatment of allergic eye diseases, you can choose a drug from any group, which, if insufficiently effective, can always be replaced with another.

Membrane stabilizers and antihistamines are used for course treatment of allergies, and vasoconstrictor drugs (Tetrizoline, Naphazoline, Oxymetazoline, Phenylephrine, Visine, Allergoftal, Spersallerg) are used as emergency drops that can quickly eliminate itching, swelling, lacrimation and discomfort in the eyes ). Membrane stabilizers and antihistamines are used in courses lasting from 2 - 3 weeks to 2 months, and vasoconstrictors - for a maximum of 7 - 10 days.

Eye drops for conjunctivitis

Eye drops for conjunctivitis are selected depending on the cause of inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye. If the conjunctivitis is bacterial (there is purulent discharge), then use eye drops with antibiotics (Levomycetin, Vigamox, Tobrex, Gentamicin, Tsipromed, Tsiprolet, Oftaquix, Normax, Floxal, Colistimitate, Maxitrol, Futsitalmic, etc.). If conjunctivitis is viral (in the eyes there is only mucous discharge without admixture of pus), then drops with antiviral components are used (Actipol, Poludan, Trifluridine, Berofor, Oftan-IDU). In addition, for any conjunctivitis - both viral and bacterial, you can use drops with universal sulfonamide agents (Albucid, Sulfacyl sodium) or antiseptics (Ophthalmo-septonex, Miramistin, Avitar, 2% boric acid solution, 0.25% zinc sulfate solution, 1% silver nitrate solution, 2% collargol solution and 1% protargol solution).

If a person has allergic conjunctivitis, then antiallergic drops should be used.

In addition to the listed treatment aimed at eliminating the cause of conjunctivitis, anti-inflammatory, vasoconstrictor and analgesic drops are used as part of complex therapy. Anesthetic drops (Tetracaine, Dicaine, Oxybuprocaine, Lidocaine and Inocaine) are used only if necessary to relieve pain if anti-inflammatory drugs have not been able to eliminate the pain syndrome. Vasoconstrictors (Visin, Octilia) are used only as first aid drops when it is necessary to temporarily reduce the amount of discharge and quickly relieve swelling and redness of the eyes. Anti-inflammatory drugs are presented in two groups:

  • Drops containing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as active substances. These include Voltaren ofta, Naklof, Indocollir;
  • Drops containing glucocorticoid hormones as active substances. These include Prednisolone, Dexamethasone, Betamethasone, Prenacid.

Drops with glucocorticoid hormones can only be used for bacterial conjunctivitis with severe inflammation. In all other cases, drops with NSAIDs should be used.

The following complex drops can be used in the treatment of various conjunctivitis:

  • Sofradex and Tobradex - for bacterial conjunctivitis;
  • Oftalmoferon - for viral conjunctivitis.

After recovery from conjunctivitis, in order to accelerate the restoration of normal tissue structure, you can use eye drops with reparants (Etaden, Erisod, Emoxipin, Taufon, Solcoseryl, Balarpan, histochrome 1%, retinol acetate 3.44%, cytochrome C 0.25%, blueberry extract , retinol acetate or palmitate and tocopherol acetate) and vitamins (Quinax, Ophthalm-catachrom, Catalin, Vitaiodurol, Taurine, Taufon)

Drops can also be used to restore the cornea after injuries, burns, operations and dystrophy caused by various reasons, including constant wearing of contact lenses.

Systane

Systane eye drops are an artificial tear preparation that is designed to wet the surface of the eye. Drops moisturize the eye, protect it from dryness, irritation, burning sensation, foreign body, sand or pain caused by any environmental factors (for example, dust, smoke, sun rays, heat, air conditioning, wind, cosmetics, screen light). Drops are used for dry eyes caused by any reason. Ophthalmologists recommend using Systane or other artificial tears under contact lenses, as well as to eliminate eye fatigue or redness caused by irritation.

Price

The cost of eye drops varies quite significantly depending on what active ingredients are included in the drug, where they are produced and what the volume of the bottle is. Each drop has its own cost. Imported eye drops, naturally, are more expensive than domestic ones. As a rule, imported eye drops have cheaper domestic analogues that are practically not inferior in quality. Therefore, you can always choose the optimal drug based on a person’s wishes, as well as taking into account the necessary therapeutic effect and reasonable cost.

With the development of computer technology, our eyes began to experience enormous stress. It is not surprising that their fatigue has become a common complaint at doctor's appointments. Eye drops come to the rescue, saving you from fatigue.

Anti-fatigue medications do not require a doctor's prescription, but self-selection can be erroneous and ineffective. Without consulting an ophthalmologist, it is safe to use formulations with added vitamins or moisturizers. Eye drops containing such components will help with dryness and fatigue.

Especially in need of help are people whose professions involve intense concentration, work behind the screens of electronic devices, or inside dusty areas. Drops designed to combat eye fatigue are useful for drivers, doctors, builders, and those who frequently wear glasses or contact lenses.

Drops indicated for fatigue and muscle tension in our eyes can be divided into the following types:

  • vasoconstrictors - relieve redness of the choroid;
  • moisturizing – useful for dry mucous membranes;
  • regenerating (restoring) - from microdamage to the membranes.

In order not to weaken the effect of the medicinal drug, read the method of eye drops:

  1. Wash your hands, they should be dry and clean.
  2. Lie down or sit down, it will be more comfortable for you.
  3. Hold the bottle in your hand for a few minutes to warm it up.
  4. Remove contact lenses if you wear them.
  5. Move your head back, touch your lower eyelid with your index finger and pull it back. There should be a pocket.
  6. Take the bottle with your other hand and bring it a few centimeters to your eye without touching your eyelashes.
  7. Direct your gaze upward, drop drops into the resulting pocket (usually 1-2 drops).
  8. Rotate your eyeball slightly to the sides, close your eyelids and lightly press on the inner corner of your eye. This will prevent droplets from entering the nasal cavity.
  9. The lenses can be put on after 15–20 minutes.

If you use several types of products, then the interval between them should be 15 minutes.

Contraindications

Even harmless eye remedies that save you from fatigue also have their contraindications:

  • the period of bearing a child and breastfeeding;
  • age of children under 18 years of age;
  • personal intolerance to the drug.

There are many different situations in which discomfort in the eye area occurs. This discomfort can be caused by lack of sleep, disruption of the daily routine, that is, associated with general fatigue of the body. The reason may be heavy loads on the optic nerves when interacting with various gadgets, including tablets, phones, and computers. The condition of the eyes is affected by excessive physical activity, the use of contact lenses, and prolonged reading of books, including electronic ones.

The sensations that arise may be due to external climatic conditions, including exposure to bright light, for example, in sunny weather in a snowy area. The negative impact factor is exposure to chemicals, trauma and damage. We must not forget about allergies, the symptoms of which often manifest themselves in the organs of vision. In all these cases, special ones can come to the rescue.

Cheap doesn't mean bad

It is worth noting that the effectiveness of the drops is not directly related to their price. In fact, you can safely choose cheaper analogues. Usually they are no worse than top-end products, in which manufacturers have invested huge amounts of money in advertising, due to which their price turns out to be much higher. Most often, miraculous properties have nothing to do with it. In other words, cheap eye drops can also be effective.

The main thing when choosing is to focus not on the price, but on the problem that needs to be solved with their help.

That is, first of all, it is important to determine the diagnosis. An ophthalmologist helps in this matter; sometimes for a final diagnosis it is enough for him to study the anamnesis, but he may have to undergo some examination.

When choosing suitable drops, it is worth considering that many eye medications have a wide range of applications or hidden functions. For example, in addition to eliminating lacrimation or dry eye syndrome, they have a beneficial effect on the penetration of oxygen into all layers of the eye membrane. This allows you to get rid of redness and prevents the occurrence of viral diseases (this effect is due to the fact that a certain proportion of harmful microflora dies from contact with oxygen).

Let's look at the readings

Problems for which drops are used are divided into several types:

  1. Dryness and prevention of pain and irritation before exercise or planned intensive work with screens. To do this, use drops with a moisturizing effect.
  2. Preventing the harmful effects of infections. Antimicrobial drops are used, which, in turn, are divided into antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal.
  3. Fighting inflammatory processes. For this purpose, both steroidal and non-steroidal drugs are used.
  4. Relieving symptoms of allergic reactions.
  5. Treatment of glaucoma and cataracts.

Correct use of drugs

Given the differences in the principle of action of different types of ophthalmic drops, you should first consult with your doctor before making your final choice in favor of one drug or another. The rules for using drops can be summarized in a single list for all varieties. You should obey him, because the eyes are one of the most sensitive areas, and incorrect use of medications can cause significant harm to them:

  1. Pauses. Very often such a mistake is made when, if it is necessary to instill more than one drop at a time, the patient drips the entire dose at once, as a result of which most of it simply flows past, not having time to benefit the affected organ. In this regard, it is worth pausing for a few seconds between drops prescribed in one dose of use.
  2. Break. If more than one type of drops is prescribed to treat an illness, then a half-hour break should be taken between their use so that their interaction does not reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
  3. Dosage. It is important to strictly follow the indicated dosage. Both exceeding the norm and consuming less of the drug than prescribed are dangerous.
  4. Mode. If the doctor has not advised you to refrain from using medications before visiting him, then you should not act on your own and violate the medication regimen, wanting to see the doctor with “clean” eyes.
  5. Best before date. It is imperative to monitor the expiration date of medications. Do not use expired products, they can have a detrimental effect on the body. It happens that the period indicated on the package is only a formality, but only the attending physician can know this for sure, and only he can authorize the use of an expired drug, but even here one should treat this recommendation with caution, because health is at stake.
  6. Self-medication. Self-diagnosis can lead to incorrect use of ophthalmic agents, which will lead to visual impairment, including blindness. Therefore, in case of problems with the eyes that do not stop within two days, contacting a specialist is simply necessary.
  7. Examination. Even if you have vision problems, before using this or that drug, it is important to make sure that you have purchased the right product, check the name and contents of the package. Sometimes confusion arises due to the inattentiveness of pharmacists at the pharmacy or from a lack of attention to detail caused by eye irritation. This can lead to dire consequences, so you should be vigilant and if an error occurs, you must immediately consult a doctor or an ambulance.

Regardless of whether you purchased the cheapest or most expensive eye drops, it is important to use them correctly, and it is better to trust the prescription to your doctor.

  • If the ophthalmologist has prescribed several ophthalmic medications, you need to take breaks of 15-20 minutes between instillations. If the doctor says that the drops need to be used in a certain order, do not neglect this.
  • The pharmacy may not have the eye drops prescribed by your doctor. In this case, you should not replace them yourself or on the recommendation of a pharmacist with drops with a similar composition. Even if bottles from different manufacturers indicate the same active ingredient, eye tissue may react unpredictably to a different drug. Only a specialist can choose a suitable analogue.
  • Wash your hands when using the drops to avoid infection in your eyes and try not to touch anything with the tip of the bottle.
  • Warm the drops by placing the closed bottle in a cup of hot water or placing it under running hot water. Cold drops are poorly absorbed and can irritate the eyes.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove the lenses from your eyes before using eye drops. You can put them on 15-20 minutes after using the drug.
  • Do not use other people's drops and do not give your medicine to anyone. Eye drops are like a toothbrush: they are used strictly individually.
