On December 26, the Air Defense Forces (Air Defense) of the Ground Forces (SV) celebrate the anniversary of their formation. The beginning of the formation of military air defense units was the order of the Chief of Staff of the Supreme Commander of December 13 (26), 1915 No. 368, which announced the formation of separate four-gun light batteries for firing at the air fleet. According to the order of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation of February 9, 2007 No. 50, December 26 is considered the date of creation of military air defense.

Military formations of military air defense are designed to cover groupings of troops and objects of the military rear, important infrastructure facilities of the state, located in the zone of responsibility of the combined arms commander. In the conditions of the rapid development of the means of aerospace attack of the armies of foreign states, formations, military units and air defense units have become an integral part of combined arms formations from the tactical to the operational-strategic level.

In the modern Armed Forces, there are more than 90 formations, military units and air defense units of the SV. As shown by the practical actions of the troops at the training grounds, the level of training of soldiers and officers has grown significantly, especially in practical terms.

The basis of the armament system of military air defense is anti-aircraft missile systems and complexes (air defense systems and air defense systems) "S-300V3", "Buk-M2", "Tor-M1", "Osa-AKM", "Tunguska-M1", MANPADS "Igla" . The main means of automated control are the complex of automation equipment (KSA) "Polyana-D4M1", designed to equip command posts of military districts, armies, anti-aircraft missile brigades in mobile and stationary versions, as well as a single KSA "Barnaul-T" - to equip units Air defense of individual motorized rifle (tank) brigades.

Reconnaissance equipment includes mobile radar stations (RLS) of the Nebo-SV, Sky-SVU standby mode and the Ginger, Obzor, Dome combat modes, as well as the Garmon portable radars. Currently, research and development work is being carried out to create a new generation of air defense weapons. The basic directions of the technological basis of such works are microelectronics, informatics and robotics.

The modernization of the S-300V air defense system made it possible to increase the range of destruction of aerodynamic air targets up to 400 km, the areas covered from strikes by operational-tactical and tactical missiles (OTR and TR) by 3-4 times, and the defeat of OTR and medium-range ballistic missiles with a launch range of up to 3500 km.

The Air Defense Forces of the SV will soon receive a modified Buk-M2 complex, which, while maintaining the same number of combat vehicles, increases the number of simultaneously fired air targets for the division from 6 to 24, the area of covered objects and troops - 2.5 times, the possibility of hitting TR from launch range up to 150-200 km. Work is nearing completion on the creation of a new medium-range air defense system, which will surpass its predecessor by several times in terms of the range of destruction, the number of simultaneously hit targets and the speed of destruction.

In 2011, the Air Defense Forces of the SV received a new modification of the Tor-M2U air defense system, which today, according to the characteristics of the simultaneous firing of four air targets by one combat vehicle, is the only one in the world. Compared to the previous modification, it has a 1.5-fold increase in the parameters of the affected area in terms of height, speed and heading parameter.

In the interests of developing the command and control system, work is underway to create new unified command and control systems at various levels of command and control of troops and weapons. At the tactical level, the planned equipping of brigade sets of control means from the composition of the Barnaul-T KSA is underway, which in terms of basic characteristics corresponds to, and in terms of maneuverability, security, interchangeability of control means, and the time it takes to set a task for combat means, it exceeds foreign counterparts. The time for passing commands (information) from the head of the air defense brigade to the combat vehicle of the air defense system (ADMC) is no more than 1 second.

Every second Sunday in April, our country celebrates the Day of the Air Defense Forces. This date was set by presidential decree in 2006. April was not chosen by chance, it was in this month that the most important decisions for these troops were made, and the air defense of the country was gradually rebuilt. Air Defense Day 2019 will be celebrated on April 14.

Perspective into history

The history of the security of the celestial borders of our country began to develop simultaneously with aviation, and hence the need to protect the airspace. Even before the revolution in Russia, it was time to celebrate the day of the air defense forces, since even then there were special air defense forces aimed at suppressing the attacks of German and Austrian aircraft. The most significant events for these troops took place during the Great Patriotic War. Suffice it to recall the battles for Moscow and Leningrad. But the troops achieved the greatest success during the Kursk salient. Then the German aviation missed hundreds of aircraft. On Air Defense Day, they especially remember the merits in the Great Patriotic War and once again re-read the statistics, according to which more than seven and a half thousand Nazi aircraft were shot down during the war years, and more than 2,500 thousand guns and tanks were destroyed.

Huge merit

Taking into account the exploits of the air defense forces, according to the decree of the Presidium of the USSR, since 1975 the day of military air defense was celebrated in the country. Then the holiday received a residence permit on April 11, but later it was decided to make the holiday with a floating date, and according to the order of 1980, the air defense day was moved to the second Sunday in April. Already in recent history, Russian Air Defense Day has officially been fixed as a floating one.

Important Tasks

Currently, the country's air borders are guarded by the most modern military systems capable of performing a variety of tasks, including strategic ones. However, the main task of the air defense has not changed, all these troops are also responsible for the defense of the country, being on duty 7 days a week and 24 hours a day. In addition, the competence of the troops includes timely notification and warning when an object is detected near the borders of Russia and, if necessary, the destruction of an object that crosses or violates the country's airspace.

Day of the Air Defense Forces (Air Defense) is a professional holiday of the military personnel of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, introduced by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated May 31, 2006 No. 549 and celebrated on the second Sunday of April annually. This is due to the fact that it was in April that the modern formation of the country's air defense forces at the state level took place. The history of the military branch dates back to the winter of 1914 during the First World War, when for the first time in the Russian Empire cannons and light machine guns were used to shoot down Austrian and German airplanes. Then there was the ordeal of the Great Patriotic War, and the modern formation of the armed forces, as an integral part of the Russian army units. Air Defense Day is celebrated by all military personnel, one way or another related to the defense of the air borders of the Russian Federation.

Almost all military branches in Russia have their own holidays. They have such a special, their day and air defense troops. And today we want to tell you about the Air Defense Day in 2019, what date will be celebrated, as well as about the history of the creation and development of air defense forces in our country.

On May 31, 2006, the President of Russia signed a decree "On the establishment of professional holidays and memorable days in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation." In accordance with this Decree, Air Defense Day in Russia is annually celebrated on the second Sunday of April.

For the first time this holiday was established in the Soviet Union. In 1975, on February 20, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR issued a decree, according to which it was prescribed to celebrate this professional military holiday on April 11 every year. Thus, the huge contribution that the air defense soldiers made to the Victory over Nazi Germany, as well as their outstanding services in strengthening the defense capability of our homeland, was noted. However, a little later, in 1980, it was considered more appropriate to move this holiday to a day off and Air Defense Day began to be celebrated on the second Sunday of April. This tradition has survived to this day. Air Defense Day in 2019 will be celebrated on April 10.

How the air defense forces were born

The history of the creation of air defense forces is inextricably linked with the emergence of aviation in many countries. Aircraft used in military campaigns appeared - it was necessary to defend against them. The first anti-aircraft gun was produced at the Putilov plant in St. Petersburg back in 1914. It was developed by the Russian designer F. F. Lender with the participation of artillery officers V. V. Tarnovsky and P. A. Glazkov. However, by the beginning of the First World War, the Russian armed forces did not have time to create full-fledged units to deal specifically with air targets. This deficiency had to be hastily filled, already conducting hostilities. The General Staff began to form special Russian units and arm them with 75 mm naval guns, as well as 76.2 mm field artillery pieces, from which they could fire at air targets, both airplanes and airships. And in order for the results of this shooting to be more accurate, special optical devices were developed. In particular, the Russian inventor Ya.N. Perepelkin proposed his own lead angle device, on the basis of which A.M. Ignatiev later created his own cannon sight, which was very perfect for those times.

On December 13, 1915, the Government issued a Decree on the formation of four separate light batteries for firing at enemy air targets. In addition, in order to defend Petrograd from the air from 1914 to 1917, a special squadron was created, which consisted of about 200 aircraft. This can be considered the birth of the air defense forces of our country.

After the formation of the Soviet Union, work in this direction was actively continued. Air Defense Day in 2019 is another reason to remember what an important role these troops played during the Second World War. When the Great Patriotic War began, there were 13 air defense districts on the European territory of the USSR. However, their command was largely decentralized, moreover, the air defense forces at that time did not have their own fighter aircraft. Of course, the Soviet Union had fighter aviation, but it was subordinate to another military department - the Air Force.

With the outbreak of the war, it became clear that such a situation was unacceptable. This was manifested especially clearly in the first months of hostilities, which showed the important role aviation plays in defeating ground targets. Therefore, fighters - I-15, I-16 and I-153 began to enter the air defense armament. And although they did not differ in high speed, however, this made it possible to largely protect our cities from enemy air attacks. Then the Air Defense Forces received MiG-3, Yak-1, Yak-3 and Yak-9 fighter-interceptors, as well as foreign fighters supplied to us by the allies under Lend-Lease.

During the Great Patriotic War, anti-aircraft artillery continued to develop. By the beginning of 1945, on all fronts, there were already 61 anti-aircraft artillery divisions of the RVGK, 192 anti-aircraft artillery regiments of small caliber, 97 separate divisions of the RVGK, which had about 11 thousand anti-aircraft guns in their arsenal.

Air Defense Day - continuation of the legend

The active development of the air defense forces continued in the postwar years. However, until 1958 they were not an independent branch of the military. The management of combat forces and air defense assets continued to be fragmented. Only in 1957, after the next joint exercises of military districts, the Minister of Defense of the USSR, Marshal of the Soviet Union G.K. Zhukov makes a report in which he clearly proves the need to create a new kind of Ground Forces - Air Defense Forces. And already on August 16, 1958, the Minister of Defense signed the corresponding order No. 0069. Hero of the Soviet Union Marshal of Artillery V.I. Kazakov, who led them until 1965.

In the Main Command of the Ground Forces (SV), the Office of the Chief of the Air Defense Forces of the Ground Forces was created. In military districts, armies and army corps, combined-arms formations and units, the post of chief of air defense forces is being introduced. One of the first commanders of the regiments in 1958-1959 were A. Ganzha and S. Mukhanov.

As the regiments of the new type of troops began to form, it took the training of personnel, for which a special training center was formed near Kharkov. Soldiers were trained here for six months. After that, they were expected to take exams at the State Air Defense Forces training ground near Astrakhan.

Military equipment continued to improve and develop. By the beginning of the 70s of the last century, the air defense forces were armed with the Krug, Kub, Strela-1, Osa anti-aircraft systems, the Strela-2 portable anti-aircraft missile system (MANPADS). Russian air defense soldiers took an active part in many local armed conflicts in accordance with friendship and cooperation treaties. In the period 1980-1989. the personnel of the Air Defense Forces of the SV performed combat missions as part of a limited contingent of Soviet troops on the territory of the Republic of Afghanistan. The modern air defense forces are armed with such complexes as S-300V, Buk-M1, Tor-M1, Osa-AKM, Tunguska-M1. Regularly exhibited at international exhibitions, this technique successfully competes with most Western counterparts. The servicemen of the Ground Air Defense Forces of Russia are ready to defend the airspace of our country at any moment.
