Stoptussin phyto syrup is a plant-based antitussive drug. This compares favorably with Stoptussin in tablets and drops. Natural medicines are better tolerated during illness and have fewer side effects. Produced in the Czech Republic. Instructions for use must be read carefully.

Composition and mechanism of action

In Stoptussin syrup, the active role is played by liquid extracts of herbs known in folk medicine.

  • Thyme herb - contains thymol, carvacrol, cymene, lanool, organic acids, flavonoids, tannins in essential oil. It has the ability to stimulate the ciliated epithelium of the bronchi and glandular cells to produce and remove mucus. Thanks to flavonoids, it relieves bronchospasm.
  • Thyme - in some folk recipes it is not distinguished from thyme. Thyme contains flavonoids and phenols (thymol). Dentist patients are well familiar with the smell of thymol: they use it to treat the tooth cavity before filling it. It has a similar effect to thyme. Has an anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Plantain - has carotene, enzymes, phytoncides, therefore it has an antimicrobial effect, thins mucus, and helps cleanse the bronchi.

Phyto syrup is available in bottles of 100 ml of a brownish solution. The package includes a 5 ml measuring cup (one teaspoon). The amount of liquid extracts of thyme, thyme, plantain is 4.17 g each. As excipients it contains: purified honey, sucrose (more than three g per teaspoon), sodium benzoate, alcohol.

Indications for use

The instructions recommend using phyto syrup to treat cough as a mucolytic and expectorant. The drug is indicated in the treatment of acute bronchitis and exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, with laryngotracheitis caused by a respiratory infection. The pleasant taste of the medicine helps to use it for children.

Contraindications

The components of phyto syrup are safe, but there are still limitations:

  • allergic reactions to the components of the syrup in the form of skin itching, rash, swelling on the face;
  • children under one year of age;
  • poor tolerance to sugars;
  • pregnancy and lactation period.

Persons with diabetes mellitus (strict sugar monitoring is required) and those on a low-calorie diet should pay close attention to the instructions.

Persons who have undergone treatment for alcoholism, have suffered a brain injury, or suffer from epilepsy (due to the alcohol contained in the composition) should refrain from taking Stoptussin phyto syrup.

For the same reason, vehicle drivers can expect a positive breathalyzer reaction.

Dosage

Children should take the drug after meals to prevent loss of appetite; adults should take it between meals.

  • children from one to five years old - up to 1 teaspoon 2-3 times a day;
  • 5–10 years - up to two teaspoons three times a day;
  • over 10 years old and adults - 2 teaspoons (one tablespoon) 4–5 times a day.

You can purchase it freely in the pharmacy chain. But the instructions do not recommend long-term treatment on your own or giving Stoptussin to children without consulting a doctor. If the cough does not go away within 4–5 days, you need to undergo an examination, because its causes require various additional treatments.

Stoptussin

Stoptussin is a combined antitussive and mucolytic drug from Ivex Pharmaceuticals, which is the largest company producing and exporting pharmacological drugs in the Czech Republic. It is considered a complex drug containing guaifenesin and butamirate, and is used to treat dry, unproductive cough. Stoptussin is available in the following dosage forms - drops for oral administration, herbal syrup and tablets and has multidirectional pharmacological effects. Butamirate dihydrogen citrate blocks the cough center, has a moderate bronchodilator effect and has a local anesthetic effect on the bronchial mucosa, and guaifenesin dilutes viscous sputum and facilitates its evacuation from the bronchopulmonary system. The mechanism of action of Guaifenesin is based on the activation of ciliated epithelial cells of the bronchi by depolymerization of acidic mucopolysaccharides and in connection with this, it stimulates the ciliary apparatus of the bronchi and the viscosity of sputum decreases, and as a result, the discharge of sputum is facilitated and a dry, non-productive cough changes into a wet and productive one.

Stoptussin application

The drug Stoptussin is used for the treatment of acute, protracted and exacerbation of chronic respiratory diseases, which are accompanied by an unproductive dry or productive cough and bronchial obstruction in obstructive bronchitis, tracheitis, pneumonia, bronchial asthma, emphysema and pulmonary tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, pneumoconiosis, as well as complicated course of infectious diseases (whooping cough and parawhooping cough).

Pharmacokinetics

Stoptussin has a high absorption ability to be absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and quickly penetrates into tissues when taking any of the forms of the drug - drops, syrup or tablets. Stoptussin reviews

All infectious and inflammatory diseases of the bronchopulmonary system are accompanied by cough, inflammation and swelling of the mucous membrane, and in connection with this, dysfunction of the ciliated epithelium of the bronchi and its ciliary apparatus occurs, and as a result, congestion and inflammatory phenomena occur in the respiratory system, which leads to disruption of the formation of sputum and difficulty in it discharge due to high viscosity. Bronchial secretion contains phagocytes and lymphocytes, bacteria and viruses, so its insufficient evacuation contributes to the aggravation of the inflammatory process in the bronchopulmonary system. The use of a combined expectorant and antitussive drug Stoptussin, which stimulates the cells of the ciliated epithelium of the bronchial tree by depolymerizing acidic mucopolysaccharides and, therefore, reduces the viscosity of sputum, and as a result of this, it facilitates its discharge and changes a dry painful cough into a productive one.

It is available in two dosage forms - tablets and drops, as well as in the form of herbal syrup Stoptussin-phyto and is used to treat cough with tracheobronchitis, bronchial asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, pneumoconiosis and whooping cough, as well as to relieve symptoms of tuberculosis and cystic fibrosis of the lungs .

It is an effective antitussive drug, which also has an expectorant effect and helps facilitate the discharge of sputum and improve its rheological properties and is widely used for the treatment of diseases of the bronchopulmonary system.
