Baltic Sea Day

The environmental situation around the Baltic Sea reached a critical point at the end of the 20th century. The sea was gradually turning into a waste dump; the situation urgently needed to be saved. In 1974 Seven coastal states sign the general Convention for the Protection and Salvage of the Marine and Environment in Helsinki. And in 1986, these same states, at the next meeting of their commission, decided to celebrate March 22 annually as Baltic Sea Day. The essence of this celebration comes down to attracting the attention of politicians, scientists, the public, and the population to the problems of environmental protection not only of the Baltic Sea, but also of the entire Baltic region. Since 2000 the celebration moved to St. Petersburg. Not only representatives of the states that have signed the Convention, but also everyone who is not indifferent to the future fate of the Baltic Sea comes here every year. Currently, the holiday has been transformed into a forum where discussions of the most pressing problems are held and Resolutions are adopted on their possible solution. Resolutions are sent to the highest authorities, who take measures aimed at improving and cleaning the environment of the Baltic waters.

March 22 in the folk calendar

Magpies

On March 22, the church honors the memory of the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste. A national holiday called Soroki (with emphasis on the first syllable) is dedicated to this date. On this day, spring is expected to visit for the second time (the first time - on Candlemas, the third - on Annunciation). The Magpie Festival also has other names - Larks, Sandpipers, Winter Calls. On this day, they waited for the arrival of the first larks, baked cakes and buns in the shape of birds (usually 40 pieces, according to the number of great martyrs) and distributed them to the children. And they, having attached butter birds to sticks, with rhymes and jokes, noise and fun, ran and invited the cranes and spring to visit. Then the buns were crushed, and the crumbs were scattered around, welcoming the birds. According to the folk calendar,

On March 22, winter ended and spring began, and day and night were measured, i.e. the equinox was approaching. According to folk superstitions, it was believed that what the weather would be like in Soroka, it would remain like that for another forty days.

Historical events of March 22

In London on March 22, 1907. For the first time, cars equipped with meters that recorded the distance traveled entered the line. The innovation was not entirely to the liking of the drivers themselves, because... it became difficult to hide part of the proceeds from the owner and overcharge clients for travel. But the passengers were satisfied, because... the fare became uniform and did not depend on weather conditions, time of day or the greed of the driver. The demand for this transport service has increased sharply. And March 22 began to be celebrated as International Taxi Driver Day.

The then ruler of Persia, Shah Reza Shah Pahlavi, issued a decree in which he asked foreign diplomats to call his country not Persia, but Iran. The fact is that the residents themselves have always considered themselves Iranians, and their state – Iran. Until 1935 In international relations, both names were used, but after the request of Reza Shah Pahlavi, Persia officially became known to everyone as Iran.

This small Ukrainian town is located about 100 km from Kyiv. Until April 1986 about 12 thousand people lived in it. It would have remained an inconspicuous place unknown to anyone, if not for the tragedy that occurred here on April 26, 1986, which one day brought it worldwide notoriety. After the Chernobyl disaster, which resulted from an explosion at a nuclear power plant, this once picturesque corner turned into an exclusion zone and one of the most polluted places on earth.

On this March day, the Belarusian village of Khatyn disappeared from the earth. 149 people were burned alive, half of whom were children under 16 years of age. People were herded into one large barn, which was doused with gasoline and set on fire. Only a few of them, burned and wounded, managed to survive. So the Nazis decided to take revenge for the killing of several German soldiers and officers by partisans. In 1969 on the site of the burned village, in memory of the innocent victims, a memorial complex was opened.

Born on March 22:

After school, which Georgy Zhzhenov graduated from in 1930, he entered the circus technical school in the acrobatic department. During his performance, film studio workers accidentally noticed him and invited him to filming. This is how Zhzhenov ended up in cinema, and stayed there for 70 years. One of his first films was “The Hero’s Mistake,” where he played tractor driver Pashka Vorobyov. During his career, he managed to play many different roles in theater and cinema. Viewers could see him in “The Crew”, “Resident’s Mistake”, “The Fate of a Resident”, “Stargazer” and many others. Zhzhenov had a difficult fate; he even managed to be in exile, in the Norilsk ITL. But no matter what trials she sent, he came out of them with dignity and honor, always remaining a real person. Georgy Zhzhenov was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery.

Marcel Marceau(03/22/1923 – 09/22/2007), French actor, mime.

Influenced by films starring Charlie Chaplin, young Marcel developed a great interest in acting. From which he especially singled out the art of pantomime. And in 1947 began performing in the stage image of Bip the clown, whose lyrical image was imbued with a naive, joyful love of life. Bip, this pale-faced young man in a shabby hat and a striped sweater, was the main figure in all the mimic scenes. He made people laugh at the acute, topical problems of modern life. Marcel Marceau gained fame far beyond the borders of France; his performances took place at the world's best theater venues. He is the creator of the Paris School of Pantomime. It is said that Michael Jackson's famous moonwalk was copied from Marcel Marceau's reprise of "Walking Against the Wind."

Valery Syutkin(born 03/22/1958), Russian singer.

Fame fell on Valery Syutkin in 1990, when he came to work in the Bravo group. The blue-eyed blond, always dressed to the nines, with a pleasant voice and excellent manner of performance, won the hearts of not only the female audience of listeners. It was thanks to the new soloist that the Bravo group regained enormous popularity. And the songs he performed - “Moscow Beat”, “Hipsters from Moscow”, “Love, Girls” and others, occupied the top lines in the leading charts for a long time. In 1995 the singer left Bravo and organized his own group, Syutkin and Co. In the new group, he wrote and sang such hits as “7000 Underground”, “Radio of Night Roads”, “42 Minutes”, “Handsome” and many others. “The Last Romantic,” as his listeners lovingly call him, is still engaged in a solo career, delighting fans with new hits.

Afanasy is a name a little forgotten by contemporaries, its meaning conveys that its owner is “immortal.”

  • Valery. Meaning of the name

Kazimir is an Old Russian male name, derived from the phrase “kazat” (“show”) “world”.

  • Claudius. Meaning of the name

  • Nikolai. Meaning of the name

A man baptized with the name Nikolai must be a real fighter, the translation of the man’s personal address – “conqueror of nations” – is confirmation of this.

Turning to the traditional calendar, we find that on March 22, name days are celebrated for those who received such male names at baptism as Alexander, Athanasius, Valery, Ivan, Cyril, Claudius, Nikolai, Taras and Ian.

According to the church calendar for 2019, we find that birthday people are represented in larger numbers today. And on Angel’s Day you can also congratulate those who were named in honor of the patron saints who were canonized not so long ago.

Thus, name days are celebrated today by those who, during the baptismal ceremony, became the owner of such female and male names as: Leah, Natalya, Alexey, Dmitry, Peter and Sergey. And for boys and girls born today, it is important to choose one of them.

But, in view of the fact that on March 22 the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Martyr Nun Alexandra (Samoilova), today’s name day should be a truly special holiday for the women named in her honor.

If a girl born on this day is named in honor of the patron saint, the name will not only become a talisman for her, but will also endow her with certain qualities for which her patroness became famous.

Alexandra is a winner who is ready to spend all her strength to leave her competitors far behind. She is active, active and cheerful, a passion for risk and adventure is in her blood.

Alexandra came from a simple peasant family that strictly adhered to all Christian commandments. Her aunt and uncle were monks, and after finishing her studies, she followed their example.

At the age of fifteen, she took monastic vows at the Spaso-Borodinsky Monastery, where she lived for more than three decades.

When the first wave of oppression of the Church by the Soviet regime began, the monastery was turned into a commune, and then completely closed. Alexandra returned home to her mother, helped her with housework and sang in church.

When the persecution of religious people intensified, the nun was arrested on charges of spreading anti-Soviet sentiments. The reason was her refusal to take part in the elections and false denunciations of local party officials.

Church Orthodox holidays in March

Theodore lived at the end of the 2nd - beginning of the 3rd century. in the city of Alasiya on the Black Sea coast and was a warrior who openly professed faith in Christ. In 306, under Emperor Galerius, the military commander tried in vain to force Theodore to sacrifice to the pagan gods. After much torment, the saint was sentenced to be burned at the stake. His body, undamaged by the fire, was buried in the city of Evkhaitakh, and later the relics were transferred to Constantinople.

Fifty years after the death of Theodore, Emperor Julian the Apostate ordered the mayor of Constantinople to sprinkle all food supplies in the markets with blood sacrificed to idols during the first week of Lent. Saint Theodore, appearing in a dream to the archbishop, ordered to announce to all Christians that no one should buy anything in the markets, but should eat boiled wheat with honey. In memory of this event, the church annually holds another celebration of the holy great martyr Theodore Tiron - on Saturday of the first week of Lent.

Hieromartyr Hermogenes

2nd of March the church also remembers. Saint Hermogenes lived at the end of the 16th – beginning of the 17th century. He was the first Metropolitan of Kazan and did a lot to convert local residents to Christianity. In 1606, Metropolitan Ermogen was elected to the primate see. During the Time of Troubles, when Polish troops captured Moscow, the patriarch was taken into custody in the Chudov Monastery. From captivity, he addressed his last message to the Russian people, blessing the liberation war against the conquerors. After nine months in captivity, the patriarch suffered martyrdom from hunger. After the liberation of Russia from the invaders, the body of the holy martyr was buried in the Chudov Monastery, and in 1654 it was transferred to the Moscow Assumption Cathedral.

Holy Blessed Prince Yaroslav the Wise

5th of March- Day of Remembrance of the Righteous Prince Yaroslav the Wise. Holy Prince Yaroslav was born in 978 and was the son of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir. He left a memory of himself by compiling a set of laws of Kievan Rus - “Russian Truth”, which, supplemented by his sons and grandson Vladimir Monomakh, became the legal basis for the life of the Russian people. Prince Yaroslav paid a lot of attention to Christian education; on his orders, dozens of churches were built in various cities. The veneration of the blessed prince Yaroslav the Wise as a locally revered ascetic began immediately after his repose in 1054. The prince was glorified as a saint in 2005 with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II.
